Alfred the Great died on this day, 1127 years ago.
Alfred set the foundations of a united England and drove the invaders out, while all odds were against him. In doing so, he secured the existence of the Anglo-Saxon race.
It is an honour for all Englishman today to call this man not just a hero, but an ancestor. Hail Alfred!

In Scandinavia, on All Saint's Day, people illuminate graveyards with candles and offerings for the dead. This is a continuation of an ancient Germanic tradition of a three night festival for the dead that begins on the full moon tonight, the first night of Winter full (OE: Winterfylleth, ON: VetrnĂŚtr).
The three nights of Winter full should include several blots:
Haustboð âharvest offering" for Inguifrey. Pray for a good year.
ĂlfablĂłt "Elf sacrifice" for the noble dead in the barrows as well as the lord of the elves,Inguifrey, and the lord of the dead, Woden (Irmin).
Disablot "Disir sacrifice" for the goddesses and ancestral mothers called in Norse Disir, or in Old English Idesa.
The Old English Winterfylleth marked the start of winter on this full moon. The Norse equivalent, VetrnĂŚtr "winter nights" is specifically said to last for three nights. The Saxon chronicler Widukind of Corvey wrote that the Saxons on the continent held a three day blot to their god JÇŤrmun (Odin) in October who is also referred to as Irmin.
So between the Norse, Old Saxons and Anglo-Saxons we have a clear picture of this three day Germanic festival and the gods that were invoked - Odin/Woden (JÇŤrmun/Irmin), Inguifrey/Yngvifrey, the Alfar/Ylfe "Elves" and the Disir/Idesa.
Tonight is the first of the three nights of Winterfull, which mark the start of Winter and the dark half of the year. This video from last year shows the weoh of Lord Ingui at a barrow.
Tomorrow night I shall lead a blot at a barrow and hopefully the weather isnât too awful!
Wishing all who worship a good blot and encourage all to remember the ancestors at this time of year.

I think a lot even very intelligent people underestimate the extent to which Western societies are now governed by policies built on the false premise that human nature is a blank slate.
I would prefer it if X translated ă (ne) as âdonât you think?â or âwouldnât you agree?â To reflect the polite formality of the convention. Ending all sentences with âhuhâ sounds sloppy
The failure to reopen Hammersmith bridge is an embarrassment. Now it turns out the reason isnât merely incompetence but obstinate wokeness
Why is the City Bridge Foundation funding âsocial justiceâ instead of fixing all of Londonâs bridges?
The charity was set up in 1282. Today, itâs worth almost *ÂŁ1.5 billion*.
Yet⌠Londonâs bridges are falling apart.
Why?
The Foundationâs rules only require it to maintain 5 bridges. Funds can also be spent on âother charitable purposesâ for the benefit of Londoners.
So what are some of these âother charitable purposesâ?
đ A âpoet-in-residenceâ.
đ Trans and sex worker sector capacity.
đ A historian examining connections to the slave trade (they found links were âlimitedâ).
đ âSystems changeâ, islamic charities, migration support, climate crisis research⌠and a group campaigning against a new river crossing.
ENOUGH. Governments have failed to fix Londonâs bridges and one of our oldest institutions has not been directed to step in.
The City of London Corporation is the sole trustee of the Foundation. They have changed the rules before. The rules must change AGAIN to make all of our bridges the priority.
Change the rules. Fix the bridges.

A lot of nominally anti-immigration people have a really bad mental model of the world, and they don't really understand on a visceral level what the population levels of India, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines etc look like - there is a de facto *infinite* supply of these people and by simple entropic logic they will get *everywhere* in the absence of extremely strict controls at both ends.

This is absolutely the case. All professions and academic field associated with history and our understanding of the human past are completely infiltrated if not outright dominated by woke progressives who force their bias onto and into everything.
It is becoming the case where we cannot even ask certain questions about the past anymore, let alone try to answer them in an unbiased way because leftists have made certain topics absolutely verboten.
Archaeology in Australia, for example, no longer allows any investigation into possible extra human migrations into the country except for the original Aboriginal arrival about 50,000 years ago, and the modern arrival of Europeans. This is because all human remains other than clearly modern European ones are off limits and even the old collections have been "returned" for reburial. Those samples are destroyed and now any new finds of skeletal material cause an immediate shutdown of the entire archaeological dig. The local aboriginal group gets to decide what happens thereafter and it is almost never to let the archaeologists carry out the normal range of tests and studies they would elsewhere in the world.
For this reason the study of the first 50,000 years of Australia's human history is coming almost to a standstill now, except for incredibly biased studies that are done by archaeologists working in tandem with these aboriginal groups. It is a catastrophe for archaeology in Australia and archaeology programs in Australia have to now either focus almost exclusively on Australia's colonial period history or shift to studying non-Australian cultures in the rest of the world.
Archaeology has become a victim of the woke obsession of its own practitioners. We can say they deserve it but the field as a whole is suffering incredibly because of it. And museums are now making up for lost time and decapitating themselves in order to demonstrate their woke bona fides. The study of the human past and how we display that painstakingly acquired knowledge has become a grotesque caricature of its former self. It cannot last long in this current form is the only light at the end of the tunnel in this situation.

A shame the Saxon Christians resculpted the then 700 year old Romano-British lid. We will never know what it had on it. Very interesting research though
The identity of a skeleton found in a Roman sarcophagus in the grounds of Westminster Abbey more than 150 years ago appears closer to being solved.
The limestone sarcophagus was excavated on the North Green in 1869. It bears an inscription to Valerius Amandinus â a wealthy Briton who lived in the city in around 300 to 400 AD.
Also sculpted on the lid however is a Latin cross dating from the 10th or 11th century, suggesting that the human remains which were found within might belong to an Anglo-Saxon who had died many centuries later, when the coffin was re-used. The identity of that person has been a mystery ever since.
Now new research by our Consultant Archaeologist, Professor Warwick Rodwell, published in the Journal of the British Archaeological Association, concludes that the bones belonged to a high-ranking medieval monk.
Professor Rodwell believes the most likely candidate is Aelfwig, who served as Abbot of the medieval Benedictine monastery and died in around 1020. Another possibility is Aelfwigâs successor, Wulnoth, who died in 1049 and is also presumed to have been buried at the Abbey.
Reflecting on his research, Professor Rodwell said: 'We have two viable contenders for the occupant of the sarcophagus. We do not know the date of birth of either. But either would fit equally well if we assume the Abbot was in his early twenties when the appointment was made and close to fifty when he died. The fact Aelfwig was already a monk of Westminster might favour him.'
You can see the sarcophagus on permanent display in the our museum, The Queenâs Diamond Jubilee Galleries.

ALT A high-angle shot captures an ancient stone sarcophagus displayed on a modern stand within a museum gallery with stone walls and wooden floors. Light streams through gothic-style rose windows in the background. In front of each window, a diamond-shaped stained glass panel is suspended on a vertical metal rod.
We need to have a national conversation about deranged, woke, mask wearing neurotics dominating museum curation. They cannot be trusted with such valuable artefacts.
