I hope we could focus on the most optimal ways to achieve the goal, not just retreading what some college coaches do because their coaches 30 years ago did it. (Hopefully this doesn't come across as anyone attacking you, Matt, but if so, take a deep breath, shake it out, and then reply 🤣)

FWIW, running back and forth in a straight line at a pre determined distance isn't training for the sport of basketball

No athlete has ever improved a skill by being punished with running. Skills improve through intentional, task-specific training. Punishing an entire team with running only creates a negative association with it while doing nothing to correct the actual issue.

100% Punishment via running is lazy coaching. I love the phrase that @CoachEssential taught me: You're telling on yourself

Was actually talking about this with an athlete. She couldn’t believe coaches would follow trends in their programming. Yes they do. I regularly see a trend grow on social, then it starts appearing on athletes programs from different sports , countries and federations.

What’s best for the athlete may not always be what generates the most engagement or looks best on camera.

The truth about sports performance is that people will always promote whatever is “new” or “in,” regardless of its quality, effectiveness, or standards. When it fails to deliver, they simply move on to the next trend. The coaches who prioritize education, sound principles, and genuinely doing right by their athletes don’t have to chase trends. They stay committed to the process, maintain their standards, and continue making a meaningful difference for the people they serve and the people that matter.

Appreciate you laying out the reasoning instead of just picking a side. Rolling doesn't "break up" anything, but slow pressure may help you move a bit easier and feel less sore for a while. Update the explanation, keep the tool. Easy pace, breathe, pause where it's tender.

The question, 2 me, broadens the context athlete development. This is why, creating learning environments 4 skill adaptations are important 2 learn how these new capacities evolved the problem solving possibilities. Just because you run faster doesn’t = better problem solving

The anti-foam rolling crew is back at it, because there’s nothing like rehashing hot takes to try to stir up attention. So, here’s a logical, thought-out explanation for their uses rather than just repeating what you heard an influencer say.

Anecdotally, the biggest things I see high school football programs missing in the weight room are: ▪️Heavy unilateral work, upper and lower body. ▪️Proper hip hinging, loaded heavily. ▪️Structured plyometrics instead of time fillers. ▪️Medicine ball throws. ▪️Legitimate speed development. There’s no shortage of squats, bench press, and Oly lifts. But developing athletes holistically requires more.

Soccer ⚽️ accounts for 53.2% of ACL injuries in high school female sports, so we prioritize single leg movements like skater squats to build strength and resilience: ▪️True Unilateral Movement ▪️Improves lower body strength/ankle mobility ▪️Improves hip strength/stability

🤣...Just made a post about this and was scrolling as it was loading. – at Vineyards, FL
I’m from that weird, seemingly lost era of sports performance where you had to show up in person, earn your degrees, contribute to published research, and spend years working with athletes at different levels to earn your stripes. There was no Instagram to inflate your qualifications or exaggerate your accomplishments. An $80 online certification wasn’t a shortcut to calling yourself a specialist. You had to put in the work, build your knowledge, and prove your ability through experience. What a wild time it is in sports performance right now.
