War begins. Smallpox still exists in 1939s Europe. Immediate time-displaced plague with 30%+ lethality besets Africa. No other factor gets a chance to become relevant.

The arthropod world feels like a truly fallen world: everything is armed and armored, poisons and chemical weapons abound, deaths are horrible, you're an inconsequential one of countless many. The natural world at the human scale is comparatively fuzzy and friendly and edenic.

The real answer to this stuff is that there was an entire subset of talented blockbuster auteur (Jackson, Lucas, Zemeckis, Cameron, Ang Lee somewhat) who saw the advances in digital filmmaking we got in the 00's and it instantly fried their brains to a crisp.
