In the rush to build data centers, companies are starting to use their own off grid gas generators. This results in much higher emissions – 60% to 80% – compared with using their local electricity grid and risks locking in longer-term fossil dependence.

The fossil fuel industry pollutes for free. But in the rest of the world, nothing is free. People are dealing with climate-driven price hikes for home insurance, food, and other basics. Polluters should be paying these costs – not the people. youtube.com/watch?v=sOXUD9jz…

This piece is amazing. @business shows why desperate billionaire right wing oligarchs like the Ellisons are buying media networks, politicians, and influencers while sliming public interest lawyers: their business model is breaking the law. bloomberg.com/news/articles/… (gift link)

NO PERMITTING BILL UNTIL THE BLOCKADE ON WIND AND SOLAR ENERGY ENDS.

It’s ironic to talk about affordability when you took money from the fossil fuel lobby to kill 100GW+ of solar and wind energy projects.
It’s clear—The Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act is backed by immense support! We need permitting reform NOW to unleash American energy, lower costs for families, and protect our national security. Let’s get this bill passed!

Voters are most confident that building new clean energy projects will lower costs, while 57% of voters say that building new data centers will not help lower costs.

Voters are already furious about solar projects built only to power AI data centers in their neighborhoods. Clean energy shouldn’t tie itself to unpopular AI data centers.
NEW POLL: More than 3 in 4 voters (76%) would support a new transmission line in their community to connect more clean energy to the grid. In contrast, voters are 40 points less supportive of building transmission lines to connect more AI data centers.

@jaeporeon do you have any more reporting on this? Thanks.

Conflating clean energy and data centers is a policy choice—a choice we shouldn’t make!!!

For decades, Democrats were too afraid to call out billionaires and the ruling class for buying our elections. This is welcome.
NEW AD: Have you seen these anti-Talarico attack ads? Elon Musk paid for nearly all of them. The world's first trillionaire knows if he drags the most corrupt politician in Texas across the finish line, Ken Paxton will owe him everything. @ElonMusk: Texas is not for sale.

AI boom has all but destroyed any climate progress in US.
I checked in on Net Power, which made two pivots within the last year. First, away from its proprietary oxy-combustion tech to regular CCS plants. Then, away from carbon capture altogether to deploy far dirtier reciprocating gas engines for data centers. heatmap.news/energy/net-powe…

good thread on why "let's see what the modeling says" on BAAJA and emissions is not a sound plan
Replying to @JamesHewettDC
assumptions: gas prices, how much LNG the world actually buys, data center load, tech costs, what happens if the bill doesn't pass. tweak one or two and you can flip the outcomes significantly.

It's almost like the Trump Administration isn't negotiating in good faith. Weird. No one could have seen that coming.
SCOOP: Senate permitting deal on the rocks after Trump administration targets a fourth offshore wind project, New England Wind. @SenWhitehouse tells my colleague @kelseytam “This is how you blow up a permitting deal.”

Environmental groups created the political conditions for wind and solar tax credits in the Obama era and the IRA's passage in 2022. The massive expansion of clean energy projects drove U.S. carbon emissions down until 2025. Both groups are stronger together.
Two things. Of course the clean energy trades support this, it is unequivocally good for their industry. It will make it easier to build clean energy, and it will induce new electricity demand. Second, it's unfortunate to see the rift opened wide between clean energy and enviros. There will come a time when clean energy comes back and needs the renewed social license to operate, and enviros will remember how they were steamrolled.

EVs are not a "rich" country phenomenon at all anymore Roughly 30% of new car sales in Indonesia are already fully battery electric. Oil importing countries across the globe are making the sensible choice of moving away from oil dependency in the transport sector.
