Police responded to a call at Cobbler's Station Apartments in Clayton over a fight
Search warrant affidavits say that a couple had walked over to "cause a disturbance" at one of the apartments because a 12-year-old had allegedly slapped their son
The residents/occupants/hangouters from the apartment come out, and weapons are brandished
Ty'ryn Washington (who was out on pretrial release for another gun-related crime) goes back inside the apartment, retrieves a tan Glock, points it at the head of a 12-year-old, and pulls the trigger

Even though police are on scene immediately after, the gun used in the killing disappears, with investigators believing it was sold/disposed of via Instagram messenger
Johnston County DA says that Washington thought the gun was unloaded when he pulled the trigger, and allowed him to plead down from second degree murder to voluntary manslaughter
This drastic reduction resulted in Washington only receiving a sentence of 72-99 months, which is in the aggravated range for voluntary manslaughter
(Washington received an aggravated sentence due to being out on pretrial release when he shot and killed the child)
