What are you reading this week? At @UCTMedTech, we came across an article highlighting the incredible innovation stirring up a revolution across the African continent:
"A quiet revolution is unfolding across Africa; one that challenges the outdated notion that medical innovation, and supplies of equipment, must always flow from the โGlobal Northโ to the โGlobal Southโ.
In fact, African engineers and innovators are designing healthcare technologies designed specifically for their context. Ugandaโs ELITE Vein Locator, developed from Mbarara University of Science and Technology, uses near-infrared imaging to help nurses find veins in difficult cases: a game-changer for paediatric and elderly care in rural clinics.
In Nigeria, the Safer Births Bundle developed by the University of Lagos is proving that simple, locally-produced delivery kits can dramatically reduce maternal mortality. In Ghana and Nigeria, Crib Aโglow, the MedTech startup has developed a solar-powered phototherapy device for neonatal jaundice that costs 1/10th of imported units and withstands rural clinic conditions.
Rwanda's Babyl Health built a telemedicine platform that handles 3,000 daily consultations via basic mobile phones - no smartphones required." โ writes Peter Culmer, Professor of Healthcare Engineering, University of Leeds.

We are excited to share our latest work from the ๐จ๐๐ง ๐ ๐ฒ๐ฑ๐ง๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ต / ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐บ๐ฒ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐น ๐๐ป๐ด๐ถ๐ป๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ฅ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฐ๐ต ๐๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ฟ๐ฒ (๐๐ ๐๐ฅ๐) team in Results in Engineering (RINENG) (Impact Factor 7.9): ๐๐๐จ๐๐๐ช๐๐ก ๐ก๐๐ข๐ ๐ข๐ค๐๐๐ก๐ก๐๐ฃ๐ ๐๐ค๐ง ๐ค๐ฅ๐ฉ๐๐ข๐๐ก ๐จ๐๐๐ฅ๐ ๐๐ฃ๐ ๐๐๐ฃ๐๐๐๐๐ฃ๐ ๐๐ฃ ๐ฉ๐ง๐๐ฃ๐จ๐๐๐ข๐ค๐ง๐๐ก ๐๐ข๐ฅ๐ช๐ฉ๐๐๐จ.
Authored by Sudesh Sivarasu, Bhaveen Lalla, Chibuike Mbanefo, Roopam Dey and Michael Awood, this study demonstrates how patient-specific circumferential measurements, custom-printed templates, and mobile-driven guidance can improve residual limb bandaging outcomes for amputees.
The modelling framework included six residual limb models (ACM, CM1โCM5), bandage length predictions via Python scripts, and pressure validation with Force Sensitive Resistor circuits. Findings confirmed that predicted and observed values aligned closely, reinforcing the potential of this approach to standardise post-amputation care.
We are grateful to The National Research Foundation of South Africa (NRF) and the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI) for funding this researchโwork that has the potential to make a massive positive impact for people with disabilities. We would also like to express our gratitude to University of Cape Town Libraries.
