NFL fans grappling with something college fans (with much larger skill gaps) have known for ages. As the quality of competition in a conference goes up, it generally becomes an increasingly low-scoring league. Better players means less spacing and quicker reactions to throws.
A dumb/simple explanation for why QBs like Patrick Mahomes are no longer putting up video game numbers

Scoring drives tend to produce more yards than non-scoring drives. Sometimes drives are non-scoring because they lost yards.
Wisconsin's scoring drives vs USC: • FG drive: 2 yards • 1st TD: 75 yards • 2nd TD: 75 yards • 3rd TD: 59 yards TOTAL: 211 yards on scoring drives. Wisconsin total offense for the ENTIRE GAME: 200 yards. Wisconsin gained MORE yards on scoring drives than it finished with and won 24-7. 💀

At least, they put someone who earned a sack on the graphic. The -17 yards came from -57 sack yards.

I think the takeaway is very important. The trend to athletic QBs is facing diminishing returns. The pocket QB who can process quickly is suddenly more valuable again without that cheat code accessible.
