All those here banging on about freedom of movement giving access to 450m people to come here - it also opens the door for millions of us to leave. Sooner the better. (I said us, before the SJWs choke on their supper.)
Trotsky โ The Myth.
Ask a Western leftist which communist he admires, and you often get the same answer: Trotsky. The intellectual. The orator. The true revolutionary, betrayed by Stalin. If only he had wonโฆ
Look at the young Trotsky in the picture: round glasses, wild hair, burning eyes. Many young leftists today would recognize themselves in him. The look hasnโt changed. Neither has the certainty.
So letโs look at what he did when he had power.
Born in 1879 in what is now southern Ukraine, Trotsky was a brilliant writer and a spellbinding speaker. In October 1917, he played a central role in organizing the Bolshevik seizure of power.
Then Lenin made him Commissar for War, and he built the Red Army, directing it from an armoured train that rushed from front to front.
Deserters were shot. Military discipline was enforced through executions. Blocking detachments were deployed to stop retreating soldiers, and former tsarist officers recruited into the Red Army were kept under surveillance by political commissars. Their families were sometimes held hostage to guarantee their loyalty.
Cruelty knows no limits when you have no doubts.
In 1920, the Red Army marched on Warsaw. It was stopped on the Vistula.
That same year, Trotsky published an entire book, Terrorism and Communism, explaining why revolutionary terror was necessary. He wanted labour militarized too: workers organized like soldiers, subjected to military discipline and compelled to serve the needs of the state.
In 1921, the sailors of Kronstadt โ once hailed as the pride of the revolution โ demanded free elections to the soviets. Trotsky supported the suppression of the revolt. Thousands were killed in the assault or executed afterwards.
Then he lost the power struggle to Stalin.
Expelled, exiled, forced abroad. From there, he wrote that the revolution had been betrayed โ by Stalin, never by himself.
He ended up in Mexico City, where he stayed for a time with Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. And so the Western romance took shape: the exiled prophet, the revolutionary betrayed, the road not taken.
In August 1940, a Soviet agent who had gained his confidence entered his study and struck him with an ice axe.
The machine Trotsky had helped build had come for him too. His killer later received the Soviet Unionโs highest honour.
Trotsky was not the alternative to Stalin. He was the same machine โ only with better prose. He never rejected the terror. He rejected losing control of it.
The "good communist" is always the one who lost.
Next: Stalin.
Yes, this, exactly. But try standing up for English culture, try asking for a little respect for those of us who have only this heritage, and youโre condemned as racist. Double standards abound.
Can someone explain this to me?
Europeans settled the Cape of Good Hope in 1652.
Their descendants have been born there for more than 350 years, built a distinct language and culture on African soil, and know no other home.
They are still routinely called colonisers and told they are not African.
Move from Lahore, Lagos or Kingston to Britain, acquire a passport, and the same voices insist you are British at once and, increasingly, that your children may claim to be English.
Either continuous presence, birth and cultural formation create a legitimate claim to a place, or they do not.
The standard cannot be inverted solely according to the ancestry of the people involved.
Jews maintained a continuous presence in the Land of Israel for over 3,000 years.
The Romans renamed the province of Judea โSyria Palaestinaโ after crushing the Bar Kokhba revolt in 135 CE specifically to erase the Jewish connection to the land.
Arab forces conquered the region in the 7th century. Significant Arab migration continued into the late Ottoman period and under the British Mandate, drawn by economic opportunities created in part by Jewish development.
A distinct โPalestinianโ national identity among local Arabs is a 20th-century development, solidifying mainly in the 1920s in opposition to Zionism and later consolidated by the PLO and the Soviet KGB.
Afrikaners after 350+ years in South Africa: still colonisers, not African.
Jews returning to (or remaining in) their ancestral homeland after millennia: colonisers and settlers.
Arabs whose ancestors arrived via 7th-century conquest or later migration: indigenous Palestinians with an ancient claim.
Someone who arrived in Britain from the Subcontinent or Africa in recent decades: British, and now eligible to be English.
The standard for belonging keeps changing depending on who is making the claim.

This is exactly the sort of thing we need more of.
People with different views coming together, challenging one another's arguments and allowing the audience to make up their own minds.
You don't have to agree with someone to learn something from debating them.
We've become far too comfortable dismissing opposing opinions rather than engaging with them.

One of the reasons that I was relieved to leave the Labour Party was the prevalence of self-righteous, blinkered perspectives that couldnโt begin to entertain the possibility that other viewpoints might have some validity. The race card is not a trump card. No pun intended.

The #ConversionPracticesDraftBill has no age limit.
Any child over the age of responsibility, could be criminalised for asking an indoctrinated friend โWhy?โ
Is this the legacy Labour & @andyburnham want - criminalising children for asking questions.

Note to self: buy some piccalilli - for the first time ever.
Aries: your forthright nature, blunt speech and hot temper mean people are scared to tell you you smell funny. But you do. Thursday is a good time to buy a towel rail or a gecko. Lucky cheese: Brie.
Taurus: people call you lazy, but if you really want something you're more than capable of whining listlessly from your bed until someone fetches it for you. Taureans in relationships should count themselves lucky. Your ruler, Venus, is a bitch.
Gemini: intellectually curious and easily bored, you'll have to engage in slow, tedious and repetitive work this week, but stick with it, because when you're busy you've got less time to be an arsehole. Lucky dog: dachshund.
Cancer: always sensitive and emotional, you'll feel especially weepy on Sunday, when Uranus moves into your opposing sign. Try and stop clinging to people like a bloated tick. Tuesday is a good day to find your backbone.
Leo: this week's Jupiter transit means your unshakeable conviction that you're the most gorgeous and charismatic person in existence will reach new and nauseating heights. You are likeliest to suffer death by erotic auto-asphyxiation on Monday.
Virgo: this weekend sees Saturn square to your ruler, Mercury, causing your irritable bowel syndrome to flare up. Correct someone's grammar to restore your usual state of twitchy self-satisfaction. Lucky fraction: โ
.
Libra: indecisive and superficial, you're currently toying with the idea of a new venture, but will ultimately decide to pass. Wise. You'd have been crap. A chance encounter will leave you with elbow burns and a well-deserved sense of self-loathing.
Scorpio: Machiavellian, vengeful and twisted, you're at constant risk of tipping over into full-blown psychopathy. Get someone to handcuff you to a radiator through Saturday night's Pluto-Venus sextile unless you want to make your first kill.
Sagittarius: your hedonistic tendencies, total lack of tact and this week's retrograde Mars make it likely you will be beaten into unconsciousness in a bar on Friday. Lucky fish: pilchard.
Capricorn: venal and calculating, you'll enjoy embezzling cash/sabotaging an office colleague this week. Warning: Shirley in accounts knows what you're up to. Capitalise on the upcoming moon-Saturn conjunction to falsify your expense report.
Aquarius: you see yourself as a quirky individualist, but in fact you're an unpopular oddball whose acquaintances turn off the lights and lie on the floor if they suspect you're outside. Sunday's auspiciously placed Jupiter offers a fleeting chance to make a friend, but you won't.
Pisces: unfocused, unrealistic, unreliable: these are your better qualities. With ruler Neptune moving into Virgo, Wednesday will see you either dropping your stash in front of your parole officer or waking up to find yourself participating in a porn shoot. Lucky condiment: Piccalilli.

Dawn Butler makes a powerful point about inherited debts being owed by the modern generation. I'd like to thank her for this.
It today's terms freeing the slaves cost around ยฃ17Billion (using GDP values) on top of which Royal Navy deployments for the 60 years or so they were active in hunting down the slaves ships and disrupting the slave trade cost the UK another ยฃ30Billion to ยฃ50Billion at today's value (again using GDP values).
Using the figures above we get a sum of between ยฃ47Billion and ยฃ67Billion that Black Britains and Black people from the former Empire owe the UK Treasury. And this is before any calculation is considered for the compensation to the families of the 17,000 sailors who died on these operations.
Having explained so cogently why this sum should be paid I look forward to @DawnButlerBrent's suggestions as to a payment plan.

There is a tidy version of John Healey. St Peter's School, York. Christ's College, Cambridge. Twenty nine years in Parliament. Now the Chancellor, signing the cheques, setting the budget, deciding what you are allowed to keep.
There is another version. It is not tidy.
In 1997 he took a Rotherham seat. For the sixteen years that followed, in the streets he represented and the schools he walked past, fourteen hundred girls were being passed around by men the state had quietly decided not to notice. Some of them twelve. One was doused in petrol and told to burn if she talked.
He was their MP. He had a seat, a voice, a vote, and the standing to make a noise. He made none.
In 2012 the Times finally broke it and demanded an inquiry. His own website still carries the verdict. He had an open mind. He was "not convinced this would help the abused girls."
Not convinced. Fourteen hundred of them. One of the few men in the country who could have forced the truth out, and he wanted more time.
Then he sued the woman who said so.
A UKIP MEP, Jane Collins, accused him and two colleagues of knowing and doing nothing. They took her to court and won. Fifty four thousand pounds each. Healey pocketed his. He did not give it to the girls. He kept it. He had been called out for inaction and he turned it into income.
The pattern held. Forty thousand pounds from two donors whose addresses the register lists only as "private," while he lectured Farage on secret money. His own council tax, on his own second home, unpaid, an administrative error, and he meant to claim the fifteen hundred back from you while his party took the winter fuel payment from millions of pensioners.
Then, in June, he resigned as Defence Secretary with a letter that buried Keir Starmer. Six weeks later Starmer was gone. Burnham moved in. And Burnham made Healey Chancellor.
The knife went in. The chair was warm. The reward was the Treasury.
Now he wants to tax the banks, because a war abroad has emptied the purse and the IMF has told him to cut spending instead. He has run out of other people's money and he is going through the City's sofa cushions.
Meanwhile the legacy gathers dust. The Child Trust Fund, his idea, one point six billion pounds of children's own money left to rot in forgotten accounts while the City takes a hundred million a year in fees. Housing, where he decided families renting rather than owning was "a good thing." A children's charity he vouched for, whose founder was later convicted of child sexual abuse. In Rotherham. Of course.
The girl who was twelve is thirty seven now. She lives with it every day.
He was not convinced her rape was worth an inquiry.
And now he decides how much of your money you keep.
That is the Chancellor.

We agree with @bphillipsonMP, minister for women and equalities, that parents shouldnโt be prosecuted for having difficult conversations with their children.
But there is nothing on the face of the Conversion Practices Bill that protects them. We wrote to ask her to put that right.
FYI @BaggyShanker
1/ Weโve written to the Secretary of State for Equalities concerning misinformation that appeared in an article she wrote over the weekend. Itโs important that the debate around the draft conversion bill is accurate and the Minister should promote this.

It is worth reflecting further on the promised clarity 'about what the draft Bill does and doesn't do' because it reveals a fundamental problem with the conversion practices legislation as it applies to gender identity.
Bridget Phillipson's key argument is that 'being T+' does not need fixing. But in reality, 'being T+' involves many thousands of children with a host of mental health issues and other vulnerabilities, who reject their healthy body, experience escalating distress and seek unevidenced medical interventions.
That really does need fixing.
When T+ is defined simply as 'who someone is' or people just being 'their true selves', any appreciation that the identity itself could be a maladaptive response to a range of external factors is dismissed. Even worse, the unremarkable understanding that not all identities bring health or happiness is misrepresented as an abusive effort to 'change who someone is'. This is the kind of activist language that led to the chronic safeguarding failings at GIDS and at WellBN.
Under this framing, any denial of personal identity is seen as abhorrent: 'no one should be abused, shamed or threatened into denying who they are'. What is encouraged instead is affirmation of the 'true self' even if 'who they are' involves rejecting their own body.
So this is what the bill would achieve: special protection for an identity linked to unhappiness about the body, and criminalisation of alternative understandings because these could be 'intended to change who someone is'.
โA society which values freedom must protect everyoneโs right to live openly and safely as themselves.โ
