Called it. Matt stacked the board.
CFO, legal, and at least two board members confirmed gone.
Theyâre likely not commenting to the press because theyâre most likely in the process of exploring legal options and preparing a shareholder lawsuit.
Automattic has confirmed Matt Mullenweg is back as CEO. But three executives are reportedly now gone, sources say there's a new board, and employees are sharing what they really think on Blind.

Thoughts on Automattic and WordPress:
To get his CEO title back, if Matt stacked the board, held an emergency board meeting fired everyone then appointed a new board to reinstate him as CEO and fire the interim CEO then he now risks a shareholder class action lawsuit.
The fired board still has rights as they represent significant shareholders, they can use the courts to even get an injunction to remove Matt as CEO again.
Automattic has declined in value 83% in 5 years. Their revenue is likely bad, like really bad for such a decline to happen.
The lawsuit between Matt and WP Engine is going to trial and resumes again at the end of the month. The facts of the case are not in Mattâs favor, and WP Engine likely wins their case which could result in millions of dollars of penalties to Matt and Automattic. Matt could even be recommended for criminal charges for extortion, which could result in probation or jail time.
The board was likely trying to put Matt on leave before the trial to try and save the company and perhaps even settle the case (just speculation). The board and Matt obviously have differing opinions on how to handle the lawsuit.
Now everyone who was on Mattâs board and inner circle will now be suing him for fiduciary duty, negligence, and other misconduct.
Automattic is now going to have to deal with losing the WP Engine case, and a shareholder lawsuit that includes major VC firms, BlackRock, and Salesforce. The company will be blacklisted from any kind of venture capital while these lawsuits play out.
Mattâs only hope at this point is to find an investor stupid enough to buy out the other investors in a down round. If theyâre even willing to sell. The other investors might prefer to sue and not sell just to stick it to Matt.
If Matt cannot find another investor all he has left is the companies revenue which is in major decline but he just fired the CFO. Thereâs a good chance they wonât be making payroll sooner rather than later. Which means more layoffs.
The most likely way Automattic can get more money is if Matt steps down and a new executive team is able to get existing investors to bail the company out while they turn things around. But now that those investors have been removed from the board or fired they arenât going to do this until Matt is removed.
Mattâs likely only choice if he is able to remain as CEO is either settle with WP Engine and take the financial hit, or just lose and take the hit, layoff most of the company, go down to a skeleton crew, and stock pile as much cash as possible for as long as possible so he has working capital to rebuild. Meanwhile fend off investor lawsuits who have unlimited access to lawyers and funds who can pretty much drown Automattic in legal fees until they recover whatâs left of the assets.
What this means for WordPress? Less developers, less resources, and less leadership meanwhile AI continues to eat into their bottom line.
As the Internet moves towards becoming an agentic AI Internet, WordPressâs only hope is to become an agentic system. Merely using WordPress as a data store is not enough. It has to pivot to become part of the agentic stack but thereâs really no one to drive such a radical change to the project and Matt would never allow it as it breaks 20 years of legacy development.
Now with the pending lawsuits, being cut off from venture capital, and pissing off some of the biggest investors in the world things arenât looking great.
I take no pride in this, as it means the destruction of the open web as we know it. Something I contributed many years of my life to building is now being destabilized and destroyed. Itâs a shitty feeling, and I wish we had solved open source governance more effectively so this never could have happened.

I'll reply here for everyone's access.
I think the race to "no-code" was based on a hypothesis that didn't pan out in reality and it's time for people to accept it.
Code is far too complex to fully abstract into a cute GUI. The more you try, the more interface clutter the user has to deal with, the higher the click cost becomes, and you end up with massive reductions in efficiency along with a laundry list of technical limitations.
You also can't "empower" people beyond the natural learning curve of the industry. All you do in these cases is empower them to do really bad work.
With @EtchWPOfficial, we're focusing on using a GUI only for the areas where it actually brings tremendous benefit and avoiding the areas where it only increases costs/inefficiency/etc.
Keeping the GUI hyper-efficient means there's less buttons, icons, and levers to focus on. Users don't understand the mental tax they have to pay in complex interfaces with dozens and dozens of visual cues, panels, buttons, etc. to keep track of.
Exposing the code ensures there's no technical limitations and that complex work can be done more efficiently and with no interface learning curve.
I can do dozens of side-by-side comparisons demonstrating these facts.
People will say, "But it's only faster for you because you know how to read and write the code."
To which I reply: YEP! And you're so much more capable of learning than you think you are, my friend! When you stop buying the no-code lie and realize there's no future in it (especially with AI), adopt a real tool and learn real skills, you'll feel:
- Far more confident
- Far more competent
- Far more excited and motivated
- Far more inspired
- Far more free
- Far more empowered (because no-code is literally fake empowerment)
- Far more useful and valuable in the market
Everyone has a choice to make.

@thekevingeary What are your thoughts on @droipNoCode?
Also, I have seen a far amount of videos/lives on YouTube and want to say kudos on achieving all things in v1-Alpha.

The only one attacking the #wordpress community is Matt Mullenweg. @photomatt is threatening developers, hijacking plugins, banning members, and even creating life-long non-competes for the most recent automatticians who took the alignment offer. #wordpressterrorism #wpdrama

If you work for a company that sells WordPress products or services, your peace of mind around job security and career trajectory is suddenly... not at peace.
If you sell WordPress products or services, your pipeline just got decimated.
If youâve invested in building your business in the WordPress ecosystem, your asset just lost a ton of value.
Nobody asked for this. Nobody expected it.
Iâm glad Iâm not in WordPress anymore, but infuriated to think about what Monday looks like for those who are.

My gut says weâll see the same kinds of things that happened with the end of Flash:
⢠weâll start slowly seeing new sites built with next gen CMS that were WordPress before. Will be some big names. Theyâll tote the fact they moved away from WordPress in dev circles
⢠government organizations will start questioning the security, stability and volatility of WordPress. Security teams at the gov level will start banning it. This will eventually end up at the Fed and will be a US wide ban. They can do this piggybacked on grants - you donât get funds unless youâre on a stable and secure CMS.
⢠enterprise security teams wonât approve WordPress for new builds. They already hate WP, this will give them the ammo theyâve always needed. Have never met any corporate IT that likes WordPress btw.
⢠new developers will see the drama and steer clear for something with more fun and less issues. Barrier to entry is already high for new products in the WP market or tech debt to learn making blocks or the new block themes.
⢠errors and omissions insurance clauses may deny claims on new websites if using WordPress because of the unstableness from this point forward in the project.
What else would you add?

I'm genuinely curious as to what you and others predict will come of it all for the normal user.

We have been made aware that the Advanced Custom Fields plugin on the WordPress directory has been taken over by WordPress dot org.
A plugin under active development has never been unilaterally and forcibly taken away from its creator without consent in the 21 year history of WordPress.
