Imagine what kind of person sees this and thinks "wow, massive implications for search & rescue!"
Purdue University's IDEAS Lab built an autonomous drone that tracks runners through dense forests completely without GPS or cloud networks. By running 3D LiDAR mapping and obstacle-avoidance AI entirely on-chip, it can weave under tree canopies and predict target movement through blind spots in real time. Massive implications for next-gen search & rescue and edge AI.

The Islamization of #Syria under the transitional government isn’t limited or sporadic, and these aren’t “individual acts.” It’s a growing trend, and given the new leadership’s background and history, Syrians are right to be concerned. One good thing: some of these decisions were walked back after public outcry. Not the full list, just the highlights👇

GENEVA, Oct 26 (Reuters) - Fuel shortages in Yemen's besieged city of Taiz have forced one hospital to cut the number of incubators it can operate from 40 to 10, putting newborn babies at risk as weeks of fighting choke off vital supplies and deepen a humanitarian crisis affecting hundreds of thousands of people. "There's no oxygen, there's no fuel to run the incubators, to keep the babies warm," said Nada Ahmed, a nurse in the neonatal unit of the Yemeni-Swedish Hospital for Maternity and Childhood. Nawal Najeeb, a supervisor in the neonatal unit, warned the facility could be forced to halt operations if fuel supplies do not arrive. "It will be a catastrophe for the babies, a catastrophe of deaths and disabilities." Taiz has been largely isolated since October 3, with fightingpreventing humanitarian supplies from entering and civilians from leaving, following an escalation in clashes between the Saudi-backed government and the Iran-aligned Houthi movement.

A shameful episode thats already been forgotten about This is also the result of “both are equally bad” rhetoric. Sometimes a lesser evil is correct in both terms
A year has passed since the beginning of El-Fasher massacre, one of the worst episodes of ethnic-based genocide since Rwanda genocide three decades ago. Rapid Support Forces, a UAE-sponsored militia waging brutal war against Sudan's military government has long before then been accused of ethnic cleansing of Darfur region. They targeted and killed non-Arab inhabitants of the region for years, but on October 26, 2025, when besieged city of El-Fasher fell to the militia, violence reached an unprecedented level of brutality. Tens of thousands of civilians were systematically gunned down in the streets, in hospitals and while trying to flee the city. Many militants filmed themselves commiting the massacre, and then subsequently published said videos online. Piles of bodies and gigantic blood stains on the desert were visible from space on satellite imagery. Yet despite overwhelming evidence, and brutality unheard of in decades, the massacre was mostly under-reported in the Western media sphere. UAE continues to sponsor RSF to this day. May the world never forget.

The ‘have three, only have one is available for ops’ is a well-known thing, which has been recklessly discounted by the British 'to do more with less' for many years. Originally 16 x Type 23s. Three sold to Chile 2005, left 13. Therefore four approx avail for global ops (though more could be deployed in time of crisis/war). But in recent years there have only been eight anti-submarine specialist (ASW) Type 23s, as rest general-purpose vessels. And so, even then only three max T23s (at any one time) could actually fully handle the vitally important ASW roles (protecting the deterrent working in northern seas and monitoring Russian submarine routes more generally). The UK also failed to replace 6 x Type 22 (Batch 2) ASW ships that were axed late 1990s/early 2000s, then binned 4 x T22 (Batch 3, ASW/general-purpose) without replacement in 2011. The T23s were meant only to replace Leander Class and Type 21 frigates btw. The abandonment of common sense 3:1 rule and so having a fleet with, say, 10 frigates available for global ops at any one time, coincided with the notorious 17-year 'frigate building holiday'. Fewer ships left in service were pushed harder and wore out even quicker. We are now fast approaching a nadir in British naval history (esp with no SSNs on ops) - even a shocking a low in modern global naval history for a so-called leading maritime power. But it should surprise nobody, especially in government or the higher reaches of the military (recent past and present) . And certainly not a surprise for readers of @WarshipsIFR magazine via our repeated warnings of where things were going, since the first edition in 1998, plus the numerous warnings of other naval specialists on here and elsewhere.
