Picard management tip: Become a symbol of stability for your crew. This takes time, but then they'll move mountains for you.

One of the biggest disillusionment most people have with startups is realizing that as they grow, those startups start behaving like most large companies do. Caring about growing market share, and increasing revenue and profits. Employee individual needs become less of a focus.

Some companies execute better cuz they are just out behaving you. Not cuz they push more pressure or hire more management or set stupid aggressive deadlines to make ppl “work harder”. They organize and communicate better. Make decisions in 1 day instead of 3 months.

My boss was pissing me off so I downloaded their CV from LinkedIn and sent it to a ton of recruiters. That boss left within the week.

I've seen many types of people succeed as engineering managers. But the only types I've seen consistently succeed in multiple companies were those who genuinely cared about people, had an optimistic outlook, and were close enough to technology to stay grounded in their judgment.

The biggest problem in tech is people without merit think they have merit and they are doing a great job by holding on to their power.

If you want my advice: your lack of trust in your employees wastes more money than the code in your legacy systems. People on the ground know A LOT! Just watched a company hand $100K to a consultant who only repeated guidance already available in the company's internal docs.

Not sure why this still needs to be said, but adding more people is not a way to fasten projects with a ton of ambiguity.

Replying to @johncutlefish
Many companies are ramping up recruiting at a speed higher than they can ramp up culture. If you’re simply treating it as a recruiting issue, talent shortage will likely last longer than you want or expect.
This is why programming is an acquired skill
