কিছুদিন আগেও বলেছিলাম, পার্বত্য এলাকায় বড় সামরিক অভিযান প্রয়োজন। আর এখন এদের সাহস এতটাই বেড়েছে যে, আজ সরাসরি সেনাবাহিনীর রাস্তা আটকে সিনেমার স্টাইলে হামলা করেছে! আজ সকাল থেকে পাহাড়ে আধিপত্য বিস্তার ও নিজেদের স্বার্থে সাজেক সড়কে অনির্দিষ্টকালের নৃশংস অবরোধের ডাক দেয় উপজাতীয় সন্ত্রাসী গোষ্ঠী। এই অবরোধের ফলে সাজেক ভ্যালিতে কয়েক হাজার নিরীহ পর্যটক সম্পূর্ণ অবরুদ্ধ হয়ে পড়েন। সকালে পর্যটকদের জানমালের নিরাপত্তা নিশ্চিত করতে বাংলাদেশ সেনাবাহিনী ও পুলিশের বিশেষ নিরাপত্তাবেষ্টনী মাধ্যমে প্রায় ২,০০০ পর্যটকবাহী গাড়িবহরকে খাগড়াছড়ির উদ্দেশ্যে রওনা করানো হয়। বেলা ১১টার দিকে উজোবাজার এলাকায় পৌঁছালে সশস্ত্র সন্ত্রাসীরা রাস্তায় ব্যারিকেড দিয়ে সাধারণ পর্যটকদের পথ আটকে দেয়। আইনশৃঙ্খলা রক্ষাকারী বাহিনী যখন পর্যটকদের উদ্ধারে রাস্তার ব্যারিকেড সরানোর চেষ্টা করছিল, ঠিক তখনই ইউপিডিএফের সশস্ত্র সন্ত্রাসীরা পাহাড়ের আড়াল থেকে অতর্কিতভাবে দেশের সার্বভৌমত্বের প্রতীক আমাদের সেনাবাহিনীর ওপর প্রকাশ্যে ব্রাশফায়ার শুরু করে। আত্মরক্ষার্থে এবং সাধারণ পর্যটকদের জীবন বাঁচাতে সেনাবাহিনী ও পুলিশ তৎক্ষণাৎ পাল্টা প্রতিরোধ গড়ে তোলে এবং তীব্র গুলিবর্ষণ করে। প্রায় ঘণ্টাব্যাপী দুই পক্ষের মধ্যে ভয়াবহ সম্মুখযুদ্ধ চলে। প্রচণ্ড গোলাগুলির মুখে টিকতে না পেরে সন্ত্রাসীরা পিছু হটে গভীর পাহাড়ে পালিয়ে যায়। দুর্গম এলাকা হওয়ায় সন্ত্রাসীদের প্রকৃত হতাহতের সংখ্যা এখনও নিশ্চিত হওয়া যায়নি। তবে যৌথ বাহিনীর তীব্র আক্রমণে সন্ত্রাসী গোষ্ঠীর ব্যাপক ক্ষয়ক্ষতি হয়েছে বলে ধারণা করা হচ্ছে। অআনুষ্ঠানিক তথ্য মতে, দেশের নাগরিকদের রক্ষা করতে গিয়ে ২ জন বীর সেনাসদস্য আহত হয়েছেন। তাঁদের উদ্ধার করে দ্রুত চিকিৎসার ব্যবস্থা করা হয়েছে। সেনাবাহিনীর সাহসিকতা ও সুকৌশলী তৎপরতায় একটি পর্যটকবাহী গাড়িরও কোনো ক্ষতি হয়নি। সমস্ত পর্যটককে সফলভাবে উদ্ধার করে খাগড়াছড়ির দীঘিনালায় নিরাপদ আশ্রয়ে পৌঁছে দেওয়া হয়েছে। পার্বত্য অঞ্চল আমাদের দেশের প্রাকৃতিক ফুসফুসের মতো এবং দেশের নিরাপত্তার জন্য একটি প্রাকৃতিক দেয়াল। এখানে বিচ্ছিন্নতাবাদীদের এ ধরনের হামলা মোটেও মেনে নেওয়া যায় না; বাংলাদেশ সেনাবাহিনীর উচিত দ্রুত বড় ধরনের অভিযান চালানো। দ্রুত এদের নির্মূল করতে না পারলে পরবর্তীতে এরা মায়ানমারের সশস্ত্র গোষ্ঠীর মতো আরও আধুনিক অস্ত্র ও প্রশিক্ষণ নিয়ে সেনাবাহিনীর ওপর হামলা করতে পারে। - সামরিক নিউজ আপডেট।

Gazi Salauddin has described what he says was done to him in custody, speaking from a hospital bed. He was arrested over remarks about the Prime Minister and taken on remand. He says he entered custody healthy. He is now paralysed from the waist down. By his account, he was held in a cell where bright lights were kept on constantly. When he covered his eyes with a cloth to sleep, guards removed it. He slept on the floor on a prayer mat. Requests for a mosquito coil were refused. Banging on his cell kept him awake through the night. He says that when he reported pain, he was told to say where it hurt so he could be injected there. He describes receiving injections in his arms, chest, legs, waist and heel. He says the prison's electricity was switched off each time and torches used instead, so he could not see who was administering them. He was never told what he was given. He puts the total at 30 to 40 injections. He says the paralysis began after those injections. "I went into their custody a healthy man. They tortured me there with the intention of killing me." The High Court has granted him bail. He remains in critical condition. Tarique Rahman was himself taken on remand and tortured under the previous government, his spine injured in custody. That history is precisely why this account demands an answer rather than silence. What was he injected with. Who authorised it. Why were the lights turned off.
