Wife of a long term dementia patient here - 👋
If Bruce had signed an advanced directive, would I have been left to make the decision on when to apply MAiD?
Even after 11 years, yesterday I saw him smile, laugh, interact and enjoy his meals while being non-mobile, incontinent and non verbal.
I can promise you, I would ignore any advanced directive. Yes, he is a different man with a different life now but subjectively and objectively he is comfortable and content. I would not believe this Bruce would want to stop living.
In this case, would the “state” step in to provide MAiD over my objections and experience? We are rushing to a set of really complex entanglements. So much room for harm.
As a cancer MD, here’s what terrifies me about advance MAiD requests.
A patient with dementia could be smiling, laughing and enjoying life.
But a document signed years earlier says it’s time to die.
Administer MAiD and risk criminal charges? Refuse and potentially face a College complaint from the family?
What an extraordinary position to put a physician in.

I am pleased to announce that a tentative agreement has been reached with CUPE educational support workers.
Both parties came back together this evening to negotiate with the shared goal of reaching a fair deal and preventing any impacts to students, their families, and all staff in our school system.
Both sides listened and together found a way forward. CUPE is now taking this tentative agreement back to their members with a recommendation to vote yes.
Most importantly for Nova Scotians, this means school operations and programs across the province will proceed as usual next week, which is the best and most important outcome for our students.
I’d like to thank everyone at the table for the long hours it took to arrive here, and I look forward to CUPE members now having the chance to have their say.

SIR PATRICK STEWART (1940-2026)
Before everything else, Patrick was defined by being born and bred in Yorkshire, the proud county in the north of England which he loved to the end. You could hear it in his accented voice and in the stern honesty with which he told you what he thought and felt. Yorkshiremen have no truck with half-truths or avoidance of big issues. He wore his heart on his sleeve, which made him a man to rely on, to admire and in my case, love.
We first met as ambitious young actors with the Royal Shakespeare Company half a century ago but we weren’t in the same productions. My first strong memory was a few years later, meeting him in the street in central London when he told me about an offer to take over a leading part in 'Star Trek'. “But Patrick think of your stage career in the UK. Do you really want to risk—getting lost in Hollywood for years and years?”. Well, he took the risk and thank goodness for us all that he did for not just his devoted Trekkies but film and theatre audiences, who marvelled at his using international celebrity to star in a string of cinema successes ('X-Men' of course) and in great classical plays by Shakespeare, Ibsen, Arthur Miller, Peter Shaffer, Pinter and Beckett at Stratford-upon-Avon, in London’s West End and on Broadway.
America was his adopted home, where he met his adored Sunny who has cared for him through sickness and health, through thick and thin. But he never forsook his origins: and the proudest achievement of the most respected and beloved actor of his generation on either side of the Atlantic, was his appointment as Chancellor of Huddersfield University in Yorkshire.
His farewell performance in 'Avengers: Doomsday' is yet to be seen.

Canada’s negotiating team tried to secure a deal for Canadians, which I’ve forcefully and vocally supported.
I continue to stand ready to support and work with the Prime Minister. We will work together to do everything possible to protect the massive number of Nova Scotian and Canadian families, workers and businesses that have now been added to the large list of those directly impacted by President Trump’s devastating tariffs.
It’s clear that we cannot trust or rely on the United States as we once did. This reality must make us more determined than ever to make Nova Scotia and Canada stronger. For Nova Scotia that means developing our own energy, developing our own natural resources and finding new markets for Nova Scotian goods and services.
We have tremendous opportunities and I am fully committed to seizing them.
Building up Nova Scotia is the only true path to protecting our future. Potential doesn’t build hospitals and roads. Turning potential into reality does.
This is our time to find the common ground necessary to build. This is how we make ourselves stronger and protect our future.
Let’s make it happen.
Let’s go Team Canada!

As our province and country work together to fight wildfires, President Trump responds with more threats and punishing tariffs.
At this point, we should not be surprised.
Real friends do not threaten you when you are in trouble. They step up and help.

I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former Premier John Hamm.
Dr. Hamm, as he was known for decades, made an indelible mark on the lives of thousands of Nova Scotians. First as a compassionate family physician in Pictou County and later as the premier who made big changes to set our province on a better path.
Premier Hamm first entered public life as the MLA for Pictou Centre in 1993. In 1995, he was elected as the leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Nova Scotia, and in 1999, he led the party from third place to a majority government.
He was elected premier again in 2003 and retired from politics in 2006.
During his time as premier, he made a landmark investment in Nova Scotia Community College, calling it an investment in the province’s future.
Among his most significant achievements was his successful negotiation of the Canada-Nova Scotia Offshore Petroleum Resources Accord. He was a tireless champion for the province, and his successful Campaign for Fairness ensured Nova Scotians would be the primary beneficiaries of the province’s resources.
What he said in 2001 is still relevant today:
“I want Canadians to know that Nova Scotia wants to earn economic independence by our own means and once again be social and economic equals within this great country. We are asking only for what Nova Scotians were promised – as the revenues from our offshore oil and gas grow, the additional financial benefits should flow to Nova Scotians.”
I will remember Premier Hamm for his strength, his quiet dignity and for his determination to improve the lives of the people he served.
At this difficult time, I send my most sincere condolences to his wife Genesta and their children John, Jeffrey and Jennifer, their families and to all who loved Premier John Hamm.
In recognition of Premier Hamm’s many contributions to Nova Scotia, the flags on Province House and all provincial buildings will be half-masted.
