Neighbors Hear Nonprofit’s Preliminary Testing Results Amid Concerns About Odors Near Paint Plant - by @WPXI @_fredericktv
ROCHESTER, Pa. — About a dozen people from Rochester attended a town hall Tuesday seeking answers about chemical odors near the Sherwin-Williams plant in Beaver County.
Scott Smith, who leads the nonprofit Blue Shirt Justice League @BlueShirtJust , presented preliminary results from soil and air testing near the facility.
For Kristina Warnick , the uncertainty has raised concerns about her family’s health.
“It is scary to know this is what is in our soil potentially,” Warnick said. “Long term, it is kind of scary, you know, because we don’t know.”
Smith’s organization investigates pollution and its potential effects on people’s health.
It is not affiliated with the Environmental Protection Agency or the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
Smith said testing found some chemical levels exceeding EPA cancer screening levels.
His presentation labels the findings preliminary and subject to further review, with no final conclusions.
“Chemicals that people are breathing in called volatiles that go in the air and forever chemicals that are being deposited into the soil,” Smith said.
Smith believes the testing could help inform further investigation into health concerns.
“The good news here is we may be able to help explain why some of these people are reporting health symptoms so they can get the proper treatment,” he said.
Tuesday’s meeting followed a June inspection by federal and state environmental regulators.
In a statement to Channel 11, Sherwin-Williams said:
“Sherwin-Williams continues to work cooperatively with EPA, PADEP, and local authorities regarding the Rochester facility.
“Sherwin-Williams completed installation of the carbon filtration system by the August 28 deadline, and the system is operational.
“With respect to the thermal oxidizer, the equipment is currently in the start-up phase and is expected to be fully functional by the end of October. Sherwin-Williams has kept regulators informed regarding the schedule.
“Sherwin-Williams remains committed to operating responsibly, addressing regulatory questions promptly, and continuing its work with the appropriate agencies.”
For Warnick, the testing represents a step toward answers.
“It’s wonderful that people are actually putting in the effort and the time to see what is going on in our community and try to help make sense of everything,” she said.
Channel 11 contacted the EPA and DEP for comment on the third-party testing results.
Neither agency had responded by publication.
Smith said he plans to have another town hall after the next round of testing.
He added it typically takes three to five weeks.

The entire Blue Shirt Air Force arrives today in Moss Landing, CA to deploy the Portable Passive Remote FTIR Sensor with a Telescope that can detect acid gases and other dangerous volatile organic compounds up to 5 kilometers from where it is deployed.
This new one of a kind portable air testing system is used in conjunction with soil, surface, water, and ash-soot testing that gives unprecedented ability to fingerprint and detect all dangerous chemicals impacting communities from East Palestine, OH to Conyers, GA to Roseland, LA to Keyport, NJ to many more.
We now have the ability to fight back with truth and justice for chemically impacted communities against a comprised, captured, and corrupt @EPA , along with certain state agencies like @NewJerseyDEP , that are nothing more than puppets for the billion dollar polluters and their contractors, like CTEH, that are hired by the billion dollar polluters to deceive the public and impacted residents.
We will also be exposing certain corporate media that has blood on its hands in communities like East Palestine, OH where certain corporate media was complicit with the EPA in deception and cover up of chemical contamination that has comprised the health of affected residents.
Always Remember: You Can’t Find What You Don’t Look For…Yes, it is that Simple…

"More testing needed to reach conclusion on alleged cancer cluster in Keyport, N.J., expert says" - by @CBSNewYork @allendevlin_
From the article on the Keyport NJ contamination and possible cancer cluster:
"Some people in Keyport, New Jersey, claim the site of a former aircraft manufacturing plant is to blame for a growing number of cancer diagnoses in the community, but the state says otherwise.
Residents say they have counted 400 cancer cases.
"I started discovering a lot of people were dying of cancer around our block. Forty, 60, 80, 200, and we're like, there's something going on here," resident Sal Liguori said.
Liguori is among the residents leading the charge to uncover the cause of the alleged cluster. He was diagnosed with leukemia this year. In 2022, his son Anthony died of cancer. Liguori's home is right on the border of the former Aeromarine site.
"Forty years of lies and neglect and not caring for the public is not acceptable," he said.
At a town hall meeting Wednesday evening, independent testing results were released. Scientist Scott Smith performed third-party testing of the Aeromarine site and some surrounding properties.
He was hired by the people of Keyport following growing concerns that the @NewJerseyDEP was not being transparent in their own testing and findings.
While the DEP declined an on-camera interview before Wednesday's independent results were released, a spokesperson maintained that recent DEP-conducted tests indicate no drinking water contamination and no soil contamination at the site, and that there is no official cancer cluster designation. The DEP added they plan to meet on the Keyport contamination concerns on Sept. 22.
"If we admit there is a problem and we can get some answers, this community can move forward," Smith said.
According to Smith, some properties showed little-to-no concerning readings, while other properties, such as Liguori's, had elevated levels of benzo(a)pyrene, lead and dioxins – all of which are carcinogens.
Smith says more testing is required before a conclusion is reached.
"So this is a mix of good news and not necessarily bad news, but where we need to follow up and try to get some people answers," he said.
Both sides do agree on one thing: a conclusion is yet to be reached.
"You need to wake up because this is as real as it's getting right now," Liguori said.
The next round of testing, which includes groundwater sampling, begins Thursday."

"Independent expert suggests possible link between Keyport NJ contamination and cancer cases" - @News12NJ
From the article on Keyport NJ contamination and cancer cases:
"The expert believes the flooding from Hurricane Sandy was a pathway that could have moved toxic chemicals from the improperly capped landfill into residential areas.
The results of chemical testing inside people’s homes in Keyport have been revealed amid hundreds of cancer cases that have been reported in the area.
To this point, the state Department of Environmental Protection has said there is no pathway to human contamination from the toxic chemicals at the former Aeromarine landfill. Wednesday night, an independent investigator said there could be.
“There are more reported potential cancer clusters than I've ever seen," said Scott Smith, an independent testing expert.
“I had a cat with a tumor the size of a grapefruit," said resident Chris Brown.
Smith calls the landfill "an unlined toxic waste pit," with no barrier between chemicals and soil. He tested inside some of the nearby homes, where hundreds of cancer cases have been reported. His testing found significantly higher levels of toxic materials - metals like lead and arsenic - in the soil beneath people’s basements than outside their properties.
“You had Hurricane Sandy, and the pathway is the flooding and the exposure," said Smith. "I've been in people's basements. When it rains, you can see the water come up through their basements.”
These are preliminary findings, with more testing necessary. The DEP has yet to release its results. Superfund remediation through the EPA was mentioned as a possible option. It could be a more thorough approach than redevelopment, but a costlier and slower one.
“Once you understand the contaminants, then you can develop a remediation plan," said Smith. "This is a great community. I'm very positive and hopeful. You just have to admit there's a problem. Then we can solve it.”
“You have a chance to put 40 years behind you and do the right thing and come out and be honest to us," said resident Sal Liguori. "Let's fix this and get this place cleaned up together as a unit.”

Much gratitude to Salvatore Liguori Jr. for allowing our testing team to use his home as a staging area and command center for the comprehensive air, water, soil, and vapor intrusion testing we completed yesterday for the 3rd round of testing for 14 more sites for the residents in and around Keyport, NJ.
Also, much gratitude to Kevin Dissler and Bill Greaux for assisting me for all testing, from taking the samples, to packing up the coolers, to watching me write up the chain of custody for the samples, to accompanying me to FedEx to send the samples to the independent, certified lab.
As soon as we receive the testing results for this 3rd round of testing in 4-5 weeks, we will schedule another public town hall.

After all the false allegations and smears from @EPA (including but not limited to Mark Durno and Christina Motilall), Class Action Attorneys (including but not limited to Adam Gomez, Jo Anna Pollock, Elizabeth Graham, Seth Katz, Tudor Farcas, @SimmonsLawFirm , @gelaw_com , @burgsimpson , and more) along with the Class Action Attorneys’ PR firm RebuttalPR, @nscorp , certain elected officials, and others, it is all of the preceding people and organizations that were not only using testing data from samples taken using grocery store ziploc bags to collect samples in East Palestine, OH, but they were also using chain of custody forms with no sampler listed.
This video is from the East Palestine OH Residents’ Right to Know Town Hall with Renowned Court Testifying Expert and Exposure Expert, Stephen Petty last Friday.

.@EPA and the class action attorneys have lied in the East Palestine, OH @nscorp train derailment and the residents of East Palestine, OH and the public have the Right to Know.
This kind of deception and lying by U.S. EPA / @eparegion5 , certain state agencies like @NewJerseyDEP , certain elected officials, is happening all over the country in many other chemically impacted communities too - including but not limited to Conyers, GA, Roseland, LA, Moss Landing, CA, Keyport NJ, Times Beach, NJ, Toledo, OH, Parkersburg, WV.
Communities, taxpayers, and citizens have had enough of the deception, corporate capture, and corruption and are now coming together by the millions to demand Truth and Justice.
As to East Palestine, OH why have OH Senator @berniemoreno and @RobertKennedyJr @SecKennedy disappeared after being on the ground in East Palestine, OH and witnessing firsthand the contamination and illnesses in and around East Palestine, OH?
@VivekGRamaswamy thanks for joining me and Stephen Petty on the ground in East Palestine OH last week to learn the truth in support of the East Palestine OH residents who still desperately need help and have been the victims of the lies and deception from the class action attorneys and the EPA. It is not too late for Truth and Justice to prevail for the residents in and around East Palestine, OH from the Norfolk Southern train derailment.

🔹🔹ATTENTION ASHVILLE, OH🔹🔹
Chemical engineer and exposure expert, Stephen Petty has been a bold voice for the people in E. Palestine and has donated his time and expertise to helping OAMF write the environmental provisions in HB 983 (Data Center Accountability & Citizen Protection Act) as well as being our expert witness testifying on water contamination concerns to the Ohio Select Committee on Data Centers.
On Aug. 29th Stephen submitted expert testimony to the Ohio Power Siting Board regarding the proposed Ashville, OH hyperscale data center with gas power facility and his concerns of potential water contamination of Ashville water supply and the Teays Valley aquifer.

Replying to @nicksortor
@JDVance is great, but he is wrong on his data center assessment.
People aren’t just worried about energy costs. They’re worried about environmental impact because the federal and state EPA’s are not currently regulating the majority of the chemicals that are in the discharge water from Data centers and these can have a massive negative impact on our rivers, Lakes, streams, aquifers and local municipality drinking water.
Citizens are also being bypassed at the local level with NDA’s, bullying from the developers, and not being allowed to have a vote.
This is a huge issue to REPUBLICANS in Ohio… not just Dems & Independents. It’s the reason we wrote legislation to address citizens’ concerns! We consulted with chemical exposure expert Stephen Petty to write the environmental safety provisions. @pettypodcast1
