Secret to becoming a great reader? Read a lot. Secret to becoming good at math? Do a lot of math. There's no mystery to being good at anything. Good coaching, good technique, good practice. Here are some fun mental math problems to try. Do you know what a snake uses to smell?

That's exactly what I would do! Many students are at grade level when it comes to technical/arithmetic skills but below grade level when it comes to reasoning skills. Our kids simply do not do enough reasoning-rich problems or practice. Using appropriate puzzles is the whole key!

@gregtangmath What do you think about giving struggling students the Tangy Tuesdays and Wordy Wednesdays at the grade level below to teach them the format and then working them to grade level? Ex: using the bar models at a lower level to teach them how to model word problems?

I try to emphasize w/ students & teachers – CONCEPT before COMPUTATION! What do these equations mean separately? What do they mean together? Do all of us (including me) tend to jump in & immediately start doing calculations? Can we get ourselves to stop, reason, make sense FIRST?

Working with teacher leaders on more effective planning by doing the task first. Liz makes the perfect analogy. “I read the book before teaching it to think about what I want to ask and what I want to highlight. It only makes sense to do the math task first for the same reason.”

Mind blown! 🤯 Build the concept before the convention! Make sense before you teach the symbol! Knowledge before notation. Meaning before memorization. Reason before rules. @gregtangmath @SSchneiderCISD @HeatherWolber @ComalLueck @Supt_comalisd @kerrygain – at Austin, TX
