I think of fanfic the same way I think of zines from back in the day, sure, you *could* "improve" them by making them more like professionally published glossys, but part of the whole point of them was that they weren't that. The lack of "professionalism" was central to the form.

not to wade into discourse but i write fanfic & i also write irl trad published books (one published, one in the works, many short stories in anthologies) & i will say that a subset of readers say things to fic writers that would be unthinkable to receive directly as an author
If we are going to talk about greed in the game lets focus on them shoving sports betting down everyone's throats.

Filmmaking can never be ethical. You are stealing light and sound and putting it inside a little box. That is not nice

I wonder why this attitude is always applied to subjects like literature, but not to other ones. I never had a math class where I said "wow, this equation rips!" Of course it is all "take your medicine," it is college, not a book club.

I shit on having to have 5 different apps to watch NHL games, but hearing "Fly-uhs" said in my native tongue is great.
I think this nails the real missed opportunity of that article. It could have been a chance to explore issues around fandom, social media, and being in the public eye with nuance. Instead it just perpetuated all those issues.

in the era of sports betting and players also getting harassed for losing people (usually men!) their parlays you will never convince me parasocial social media harassment in sports is a gender-specific issue, sorry.
If the NHL really wants to “grow the game” making it actually possible to watch it would be a good start.
