The most important scene in You Can See Everything is when Nathan Fielder shows Elizabeth Holmes the Abbott and Costello routine where neither one can understand the other. He asks her to explain it and she eventually breaks down. Fielder is being a great psychoanalyst here!
Deleuze: “…phenomenology has had three moments: the large Hegelian structures, then Husserl’s semiology, the study of sense…but finally something very different started with Sartre. Sartre introduced a full pragmatics into phenomenology, and converted it into this pragmatics.”
I learned about this passage from a wonderful presenter in the North American Sartre Society panel that I was in. The source text is unknown, but I would love to find out!

“To explain how the strangest metaphysical claims of a philosopher really come about, it is always good (and wise) to begin by asking: what morality is it (is he) getting at? … There is absolutely nothing impersonal about the philosopher.”
-Nietzsche, Beyond Good and Evil, 1.6
We speak far too much of ‘structures’ and far too little about *systems,* and that is the crux of the problem as it concerns the present state of the ruthless criticism of all that exists

I am reading Lenin’s account of the fall of the Second International, where we find the most succinct and elegant definition of Marxism:

Despairing over the abstract numbers and student performances at [insert institution that are you’re immediately removed from] is only useful if it prompts an existential question: “What can I do concretely as an instructor at my institution to mediate the problem of higher ed?”
It has become a common place in academia to mourn the literacy of students and no doubt things appear dire, but I just finished grading my students’ in-class essays and I am incredibly proud of the creativity and learning they demonstrated. It is definitely possible to move them.

Everybody’s first responsibility is to all humanity

I think nithya’s first responsibility is to the people of Los Angeles, including the many DSA-LA members who voted to endorse her and are working their tails off for her because they believe she is aligned with DSA, not to 27 dorks in the NPC who think they know better

Fun fact when you visit the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon you can now stand on an observation deck that I built
[trying to connect with my students, who I am hopelessly out of touch with] so phronesis is kind of like ‘street knowledge’
Adorno made his fair share of contributions but it would be sad if the best we could do is relive the same problems as him. Marxism does not need to become more Adornian so much as it needs a critical reorientation to praxis, and the latter does not reduce down into the former.
“When people develop class consciousness, it’s not that they’ve passively registered something that is already true, it’s that they’ve constituted themselves as a group, which has already changed the so-called ‘world.’” – Mark Fisher, Feb. 23 2016
It must be said that the world-historic evil of Israel denies humanity to everyone. The colonized are deprived of it in the constant repetition of images like this, the colonizers and their enablers forfeit it to maintain the colonial system. Everything is really on the line.
