This is what I’ve found with my 7 year old. His diagnosis of autism was confirmed a few weeks into lockdown. He’s been the happiest I’ve ever known him to be without having to go to school. He’s not having meltdowns, no physical aggression, and isn’t chewing his hands/clothes.
Would you be willing to talk to us further about this? We’re keen to hear about the experiences of learners with SEND during the COVID crisis.

Absolutely - many of our ASD students are LOVING being at home and thriving working remotely and sending work in. They are positive in their online communications with staff etc

This is so hard, I have noticed it with a few of my very young pupils rather than the older ones. With our phonics classes, we have cut down how many we were offering, as some parents were overdoing it and the kids were getting overwhelmed.

It’s definitely hard for some at the moment. I haven’t got a panacea but we are finding some improvement when I have a regular 1:1 with a pupil online to check in. Also supporting/being with parents too, who are finding it challenging & not wanting to ‘stand over’ their child.

Can you expand on that? What do you think is needed to keep motivation going?

Is that better in order to keep up motivation or spacing work throughout the day doesn’t work for her?

Do you think people haven’t accessed it because they can’t, or because they’ve been working in a different way?
Today there has been discussions around a lethargy in remote learning, do you agree? What could be done to remedy this? #WhatWorks #SEND
As some children head back into school, what aspects of online learning will you be keeping to support SEND pupils? #SEND #onlinelearning #WhatWorks

Different things were at the fore of our attention, before, and we had different demands on our time. Fresh starts will draw on what has been successful in recent weeks.

If it's any help to give you comfort. She now is sitting her GSCE's. Doing better than I thought she would.
It's a fight, but one worth taking on. Never stop believing, even when others do.

All of those. Also, the environment is low-arousal compared to a busy classroom. Not much background noise. I take care not to present her with overlapping demands.

Is it the pace? Or completion of tasks? Do you think small chunks of material helps?

Brilliant, we would love to know what you find :) thanks.

Do you find that each day is the same in terms of what they are choosing to do? Or does it change daily? Is there a particular time that suits?
