By June 1898, Spain had held Guam for four centuries, but the island was so neglected that the local authorities hadn’t received news for months. They didn't even know the Spanish-American War had begun.
The USS Charleston slides into the harbor, expecting resistance. Nada. So they fired a few warning shots at an old fort, which the Spanish interpreted as a friendly salute. Local officials rowed out in a boat and apologized that they were out of gunpowder so they couldn’t return the "salute."
The Americans said, "Uh, yeah ... we’re at war so you’re our prisoners.” The Spanish officials were stunned. After some awkward back-and-forth, the Spanish governor surrendered, along with ~50 poorly equipped soldiers. No one got hurt. Completely bloodless.
US sailors raised the flag and found a single American citizen on the island. A merchant whose previous job was as an elevator operator in San Francisco. The ship's captain said, "you're in charge now," and sailed off to the Philippines.
It took about six months for the Americans to return.

Guys like Ryan Holiday have to many followers because people hate themselves to such a degree that they won‘t trust their eyes and suppress their instincts.

Hahaha it is annoying af when a group of dudes (it's always all dudes) at the next table are talking about AI/crypto/da markets/et. al.
When an all-male group walks into the restaurant and they look like living breathing memes you already know they're going to talk LOUDLY about the above because they want everyone to know how RICH and SMART and ON TOP OF THINGS and NOT FALLING BEHIND they are.

All it takes is:
- $50/year (and Kindle sales)
- A library card
- An hour each day
That'll get you to 25-30 books per year. You'll learn a ton and without even trying, either.
Keep it up for a decade and you'll run circles around your peers. I guarantee it.

This always gets posted as if Hemingway was just a writer the FBI randomly decided to watch. No one ever mentions that the reason they did this is that Hemingway ran his own personal counter-intelligence op in Cuba during WW2 (The Crook Factory). And the FBI was pretty reasonably suspicious of private spies with communist ties.
It's also very hard to believe that his friends thought he was crazy or that this was what drove him to suicide. He was a spy, so he knew he was likely being spied on, and he knew why. If his friends didn't believe him it was just because he wasn't telling them the full story.

The Spanish language is designed to avoid responsibility.
Perhaps the structure of the language is why Latinos are kinda irresponsible. The language informs the people's mentality.
Some examples:
Today at breakfast the bread 🍞 ran out so guy said:
"Se vació" - it emptied itself
And then someone dropped their 📞 phone:
"Se me cayó" - it fell from me
You could say "i dropped it" like "yo deje caer mi celular" or something, but people dont talk that way.
Everything in the language absolves responsibility from the individual, as if things happen by chance.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Spanish accidental "se" constructions (e.g. "se me cayó", "se vació") are standard grammar for unintentional events, used by Spanish speakers and paralleled elsewhere. They do not indicate or cause irresponsibility; strong linguistic determinism is discredited.
