Heavy rain has flooded tens of thousands of tents housing displaced Palestinians across Gaza. It was a sleepless night for many, as the rain washed away makeshift shelters and soaked blankets and mattresses. More than a year after the ceasefire began in Gaza, little has changed for its more than 2,000,000 residents – most of whom now live in tent camps.

In just 36 hours, heavy rain turned streets in Gaza into rivers and flooded entire displacement camps, support now: chuffed.org/project/113222-t…. Families who went to sleep under canvas woke up to soaked mattresses, drenched clothes, and shelters they could no longer sleep in. Early reports put the number of shelters destroyed in the tens of thousands. The full scale is still becoming clear, with perhaps over 150,000 tents and makeshift shelters destroyed. After last night’s storm, roads are flooded, tents have been destroyed, and aid teams are struggling to reach the people who depend on them. Imagine spending the night trying to keep your children dry, then waking up with nowhere to cook and wondering whether anyone can get through with food. On September 29, The Sameer Project kitchen prepared 437 meals of rice with chicken breast. Our South Team delivered 417 meals to Al-Asdiqaa (Friends) Camp at the Asqalan Complex in Deir al-Balah and 20 to Civil Defense in Al-Nuseirat. The total code was $1,015 after 11% commission. What I witnessed and saw today in one of the displacement camps is beyond human endurance and exceeds anything that words or imagination could ever describe. These are heartbreaking scenes, and no matter how powerful the words may be, they can never convey the full scale of the tragedy people are experiencing here. There are no tents left to speak of. The rain and floods have swept them away, torn them apart, and completely destroyed them, until almost no trace of them remains. Families have been left with no shelter, no roof over their heads, and not even a dry corner where they can take refuge from the bitter cold. Entire families are sleeping out in the open, with no dry clothes to protect their bodies from the cold. Children are submerged in water and mud, while mothers and fathers desperately try to salvage whatever remains of their belongings. Clothes, blankets, covers, mattresses, and bedding — everything has been soaked and submerged in water. These families have nothing left to cover themselves with or protect them from the harsh winter. The bodies of children, women, the sick, and the elderly are trembling nonstop. They are shaking from the bitter cold as the freezing temperatures mercilessly tear through their fragile bodies. There is no warmth, no shelter, no dry clothing, and no means of protection from the death drawing closer with every passing hour. Men are crying in anguish, pain, and helplessness. Men stand before their children and families, powerless to protect them or provide them with even the most basic necessities of life. Fathers have no roof under which to shelter their children, no blankets to warm their little bodies, and no refuge where they can escape the storms, rain, and floods. They have been left alone to face the deadly cold, while the sounds of bombardment and gunfire continue to haunt them at every moment. I swear that all the horrifying and heartbreaking scenes you have witnessed are nothing more than a very small fraction of the true scale of this catastrophe and the suffering and pain endured by families here in Gaza. What remains unseen is far worse than anything photographs or videos could ever capture or describe. What families here are experiencing is beyond all imagination and description. Children are facing the threat of freezing to death and drowning, while families are being crushed under the weight of the freezing cold and devastating floods. More than 70,000 families remain without shelter to this very moment — with no roof to protect them, no safe place to sleep, and no means of protection against these brutal conditions and the threat of death. Entire families are being abandoned in the open and on the streets, facing an unknown fate, with no idea how they will survive this catastrophe. What more is the world waiting for?! How much longer will this horrifying silence continue?! Why are we left to face death every single day?! And why are our families and children being abandoned to face it alone, while no one moves to save them?! I swear that families across Gaza are now facing a real and imminent threat to their lives. We are witnessing a humanitarian catastrophe that is worsening by the hour, a tragedy that could claim the lives of even more innocent people, particularly children, women, the sick, and the elderly, if these conditions continue without urgent intervention to save them. Please, act now, before it is too late. Save what remains of Gaza. Gaza is crying out for help. Gaza is drowning. Gaza is facing a humanitarian catastrophe that can no longer wait.
