🇮🇳India's long-term game: India will implement the decommissioning of its old 🇫🇷🇮🇳Chetak and 🇫🇷🇮🇳Cheetah helicopters with 200 new Light Multirole Helicopters (€1.9-2.1Bn), to be produced in India under licence by the competitors in the tender: the 🇮🇹Leonardo + 🇮🇳Adani and 🇫🇷Airbus + 🇮🇳Tata partnerships will likely split the order, probably with a prevalence of Leonardo's AW109 TrekkerM. 🇺🇸US based Bell, also competing in the tender, is unlikely to win. This tender concerns premium helicopters, while Bell's helicopters could compete with 🇮🇳HAL's LUH in secondary procurements. 🇷🇺Russian Ka-226T, which had been selected in 2014, has not entered the procurement process, and even the old order failed because of European sanctions that blocked the production of the engine (🇫🇷Safran). The share of 🇷🇺Russian weapons imported by the Indian armed forces has fallen from 70% in 2011–2015 to less than 40% today, while the 🇪🇺European share (led by France) has risen from a few percentage points 10 years ago to around 40% today. 🇮🇱Israel has also grown, from 4.5% to 15%, alongside the 🇺🇸US and 🇰🇷South Korea. Major weapons flows are one of the best proxies for strategic shifts, because the strategic bodies deciding procurement do so based on expectations of strategic alignment and the supplier's long-term reliability, as it is essential that the supplier cooperate in production, maintenance and technical assistance for the vehicle under the widest possible range of scenarios. India, aware of being essentially indispensable for an orderly decoupling from China, is playing its strategic cards well, remaining just ambiguous enough to retain leverage without becoming repulsive to the trillions of Western capital moving towards the peninsula in the Indian Ocean. For instance, it continues to buy cheap Russian oil to support its industrial expansion. On the issue of distancing itself from the BRICS and strategically and militarily aligning with the US and its allies, however, India seems to have taken a rather decisive path. 🇵🇰Pakistan obviously matters, as a regional adversary and by now virtually a 🇨🇳Chinese colony through the port of Karachi, and 🇮🇷Iran matters as a consequence, which partly explains the alignment with Israel. And of course, Russia's weakness matters: now an economy smaller than India's and incapable of projecting power or industrial capacity, Russia is increasingly seen by Delhi as a balance on certain regional issues against China, and as a gas station. The Indian economic "miracle" that we will experience over the next 20 years, as the capital of the first globalization pours into the country, will probably be different from the Chinese one. Many would bet on it being "inferior" in a certain sense, and undoubtedly the country south of the Himalayas is more difficult to organize as a perfect cog in global supply chains. Nonetheless, a more genuine and structural alignment with the West (China, for instance, has never bought weapons from the US or Europe since Tiananmen events), its natural exposure to the sea, and a less rigid economic-strategic vision of the world than China's could make India's development more sustainable in the long run. My base case at the moment is that not only will India grow much faster than China over the next 10–20 years (easy bet), up to x3-4 faster over the course of that period, but the Indian economy could overtake the Chinese economy within two decades and then become sustainably integrated into global trade in a way China never has. The OP, lamenting that India will buy (in part) foreign helicopters instead of the domestic one, obviously has a narrow view of this whole affair and misses the broader implications and signals of military procurement. Beyond the quality of the products, for India, buying Western weapons today is an enormous guarantee of security and economic success. The value of the deal in billions is entirely irrelevant in the face of this. India, by all means, is playing the long-term game. Below the 4 likely backbones of India's future light helicopter fleet: the AW109 TrekkerM; the AW169; the Airbus H125; the HAL's LUH.
Hey @grok, if a country has an indigenous light helicopter, including its engine, yet splits a 400-helicopter requirement into three types (200+120+80) including one type that Pakistan is retiring and that would be produced under licence without anything substantial being made in India creating a logistical nightmare, what would you call this: strategic planning or institutional absurdity?

This is like 'Common People' from Black Mirror, where the system keeping the protagonist alive after a brain tumor works like a tiered economic trap that requires subscription upgrades if you don't want to live a miserable life. Luckily, Musk gives SpaceX shares to kids.
NEW: Our reporting found the recent Starlink outage in Ukraine could be part of an elaborate upsell. When U.S. officials asked Musk's company about it, they were told the problem could be fixed by upgrading to a new contract. @isaacstanbecker @TheAtlantic theatlantic.com/national-sec…

Destinus alone now produces many more hypersonic cruise missiles (high-speed scramjet/ramjet vectors) than the entire US and Russia combined, using zero Chinese components. China remains the global leader in mass production capability for hypersonic systems, but Europe is growing much faster.
“Defence startup Destinus has built more than 1,750 Ruta cruise missiles in Europe and now produces ‌more cruise missiles in a month than Europe did in a year before Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, it told Reuters. The Dutch-headquartered company said monthly output of its Ruta missile had reached nearly 300 units. Chief Executive Mikhail Kokorich said he expects Destinus from next year to be able to meet demand across Europe, including Ukraine, for turbojet engines in the roughly 1.5-kilonewton thrust class used in cruise missiles. He said the company was already producing such engines in series and supplying them both for its own missiles and to other manufacturers… The company told Reuters it had begun production of the larger Ruta Block 2 missile, ‌which is designed to carry a 250-kg payload and travel more than 700 km. Unlike the current Block 1 version, the missile is designed to be stored, transported and launched from the same container, simplifying logistics for larger stockpiles… Kokorich also contrasted Destinus' China-free supply chain with wartime production in Ukraine, saying access to Chinese suppliers would make manufacturing ‘cheaper, faster, easier’ but that Destinus used no Chinese components.” reuters.com/business/aerospa…

🇪🇺🇬🇧 A European army will become a reality. The EU aims to procure at least 40% of its defence equipment jointly by 2027. Ten European countries have joined France’s nuclear deterrence initiative. The new European Security Council will act as a European NATO, coordinating military spending and joint responses EU Defence Commissioner has proposed a European force of 100,000 troops. If Russia chooses to escalate, it will be the last thing it does.

The whole thread is an incredible shit-show. I wonder if there will be any backlash against notaries. They’re very wealthy, so the left could attack them, and clearly opposed to freedom of enterprise, so the libertarian right should hate them. Let’s see…

Yeah it’s called workers rights
European hiring rules are genuinely insane. For example - if you own a company in the Netherlands and one of your employees gets sick, you are required to pay at least 70% of their wages for up to 2 years. If they can't go back to work after 2 years and you haven't done enough for their reintegration, you pay their wages for 1 more year. And you can't fire them until after that extra year!

Delegating money printing to ... Russia. What could possibly go wrong.
Russia admitted that it is printing banknotes for 12 African countries. Which means it's likely to be printing IDs for them as well. This indicates that Russian intelligence operatives can have totally real documents issued by African countries, if they ever need.

Joining forces with @tradexyz Welcome to our community.
trade[XYZ] and ICE, owner of the New York Stock Exchange, are joining forces to bring 24/7 perpetual futures on Hyperliquid to the United States. In just over a year, our markets on Hyperliquid have surpassed $650 billion in volume. They provide continuous price discovery for stocks, indices, and commodities, and have become trusted reference points for retail and institutions alike when traditional markets are closed. Much of the world trades them. Until now, Americans could only watch. We intend to change that. Subject to CFTC approval, trade[XYZ] and ICE plan to establish a new, dedicated U.S. market, with novel exchange and clearing infrastructure built on Hyperliquid. Planned contracts span equities, indices, commodities, FX, and crypto, with access through participating brokers and platforms. We’ll share more on products, eligibility, and timing as approvals progress. ICE brings more than 25 years of experience operating regulated markets, clearing, and managing risk. trade[XYZ] brings the product development, market design, and technology behind the most liquid and robust markets on Hyperliquid. Innovation and the protections of U.S. regulation shouldn’t be a trade-off. Together, we plan to prove it. ICE is making a strategic investment in trade[XYZ] and joins us in building towards the future of Hyperliquid. A small group of market luminaries is joining as well, beginning with Stan Druckenmiller. For more than four decades, few investors have anticipated the great turns in markets as often as Stan. We’re proud to have him with us for the next one. We’re building the U.S. market in parallel with our existing HIP-3 markets, which we’ll continue to expand and innovate on. We expect both to flourish. They each have a long road map ahead, from new asset classes to new ways to trade them. To the Hyperliquid community, whether you were here before us or came because of us, thank you. You took a chance on new markets and you made them matter. You’ll forever be a part of this story. Anything. Anytime. On ICE[XYZ].

No rate hikes, as expected. By keeping rates below or in line with reported inflation, you drain value from creditors and reduce the debt burden, something both sides of the Atlantic like. By keeping rates below market rates, you increase private money creation and demand for government bonds, as it is de facto possible for banks to borrow at central bank rates, lend to the state or other entities, and capture the arbitrage. Another thing both sides of the Atlantic like, especially as even countries like Germany are running record primary deficits. Both things in Europe result on average in a transfer from low-debt countries to high-debt countries, with the exception of the share of debt that is joint debt. Both things are ways to tax creditors' wealth indexed in the currency in order to service the debt stock (and/or allow it to grow). Both things will be pursued in the foreseeable future.
Financial repression is the way to go for central banks now. I find it unlikely that the Fed and the ECB will hike rates this week. Hard times coming for small and fragile currencies.
