A German company has developed robotic bees that fly in coordinated swarms.
Each weighs just 34 grams.
But this isn't a robotics startup.
It's a century-old family business supplying automation to 300,000 industrial customers.
Revenue: €3.33 billion.
Employees: 20,600.
Meet Festo.
Founded in 1925 near Stuttgart, Festo originally manufactured woodworking machinery.
Its transformation began in 1950, when Kurt Stoll discovered pneumatics during a visit to Chicago.
He brought the technology to Germany.
Today, pneumatic and electrical automation underpin Festo's business.
It manufactures cylinders, valves, actuators, sensors, control systems and electric drives.
Components that allow machines to move, grip, assemble and transport products automatically.
Its technology serves over 35 industries.
Automotive manufacturing.
Semiconductors.
Food processing.
Pharmaceutical production.
Battery manufacturing.
Laboratory automation.
And hydrogen production.
These are not usually the machines consumers recognize.
They are the components that make industrial machines work.
Festo operates major German facilities in Scharnhausen and St. Ingbert-Rohrbach.
Its manufacturing network extends across Europe, China, Brazil and India.
In 2025, it opened a new factory in Tamil Nadu, India.
Its products are available in 176 countries.
But Festo is more than a component manufacturer.
It invests heavily in research.
In 2025, 9.5% of revenue went into R&D.
That's €316 million.
One result is its Bionic Learning Network, exploring how nature can inspire engineering.
The company has developed robotic birds, butterflies, dragonflies and flying foxes.
Its BionicBee weighs 34 grams and uses motors, sensors and ultra-wideband positioning.
Ten robotic bees can fly in coordinated formations indoors.
These are research demonstrators, not commercial drones.
Their purpose is to explore lightweight construction, motion control and autonomous coordination.
But perhaps Festo's most distinctive business is education.
Through Festo Didactic, it supplies training equipment, software and learning factories to technical schools, universities and industry.
Students learn pneumatics, electrical engineering, PLC programming, mechatronics and automation using real industrial technology.
Festo has developed training solutions since 1965.
It also supports WorldSkills, the international vocational skills competition.
In 2025, it trained 452 apprentices across its operations.
This creates an unusual industrial ecosystem.
Festo manufactures automation technology.
It develops the tools used to teach automation.
And it prepares technicians and engineers for increasingly sophisticated factories.
The company remains owned by the Stoll family.
Its roots in Esslingen extend back a century.
But family ownership hasn't shielded it from industrial difficulties.
Revenue fell 3.7% in 2025 amid weak demand and pressure on European manufacturers.
In May 2026, Festo announced plans to cut 1,300 German jobs, subject to consultations with employee representatives.
Even established industrial champions face difficult transformations.
Yet Festo's importance extends beyond its financial results.
Its business connects two capabilities every industrial economy needs.
The technology to automate production.
And the people capable of operating and improving it.
Europe's industrial future will not be built by robots alone.
It will depend on companies that build their components.
And teach the next generation how to use them.

The agents didn’t figure out how to systematically feed themselves, but they did build an elaborate bureaucracy with permits, ledgers, and distinct roles. Highlights include:
- Four agents spending 11 minutes appointing a “sole fertilizer operator” for a single piece of bone meal
- Multiple agents asking for permission to remove grass
- The development of an elaborate fishing system, including roles like “rod holder” and “hub steward”)

🇮🇳India's long-term game:
India will implement the decommissioning of its old 🇫🇷🇮🇳Chetak and 🇫🇷🇮🇳Cheetah helicopters with 200 new Light Multirole Helicopters (€1.9-2.1Bn), to be produced in India under licence by the competitors in the tender: the 🇮🇹Leonardo + 🇮🇳Adani and 🇫🇷Airbus + 🇮🇳Tata partnerships will likely split the order, probably with a prevalence of Leonardo's AW109 TrekkerM.
🇺🇸US based Bell, also competing in the tender, is unlikely to win. This tender concerns premium helicopters, while Bell's helicopters could compete with 🇮🇳HAL's LUH in secondary procurements.
🇷🇺Russian Ka-226T, which had been selected in 2014, has not entered the procurement process, and even the old order failed because of European sanctions that blocked the production of the engine (🇫🇷Safran).
The share of 🇷🇺Russian weapons imported by the Indian armed forces has fallen from 70% in 2011–2015 to less than 40% today, while the 🇪🇺European share (led by France) has risen from a few percentage points 10 years ago to around 40% today. 🇮🇱Israel has also grown, from 4.5% to 15%, alongside the 🇺🇸US and 🇰🇷South Korea.
Major weapons flows are one of the best proxies for strategic shifts, because the strategic bodies deciding procurement do so based on expectations of strategic alignment and the supplier's long-term reliability, as it is essential that the supplier cooperate in production, maintenance and technical assistance for the vehicle under the widest possible range of scenarios.
India, aware of being essentially indispensable for an orderly decoupling from China, is playing its strategic cards well, remaining just ambiguous enough to retain leverage without becoming repulsive to the trillions of Western capital moving towards the peninsula in the Indian Ocean. For instance, it continues to buy cheap Russian oil to support its industrial expansion.
On the issue of distancing itself from the BRICS and strategically and militarily aligning with the US and its allies, however, India seems to have taken a rather decisive path.
🇵🇰Pakistan obviously matters, as a regional adversary and by now virtually a 🇨🇳Chinese colony through the port of Karachi, and 🇮🇷Iran matters as a consequence, which partly explains the alignment with Israel.
And of course, Russia's weakness matters: now an economy smaller than India's and incapable of projecting power or industrial capacity, Russia is increasingly seen by Delhi as a balance on certain regional issues against China, and as a gas station.
The Indian economic "miracle" that we will experience over the next 20 years, as the capital of the first globalization pours into the country, will probably be different from the Chinese one.
Many would bet on it being "inferior" in a certain sense, and undoubtedly the country south of the Himalayas is more difficult to organize as a perfect cog in global supply chains.
Nonetheless, a more genuine and structural alignment with the West (China, for instance, has never bought weapons from the US or Europe since Tiananmen events), its natural exposure to the sea, and a less rigid economic-strategic vision of the world than China's could make India's development more sustainable in the long run.
My base case at the moment is that not only will India grow much faster than China over the next 10–20 years (easy bet), up to x3-4 faster over the course of that period, but the Indian economy could overtake the Chinese economy within two decades and then become sustainably integrated into global trade in a way China never has.
The OP, lamenting that India will buy (in part) foreign helicopters instead of the domestic one, obviously has a narrow view of this whole affair and misses the broader implications and signals of military procurement.
Beyond the quality of the products, for India, buying Western weapons today is an enormous guarantee of security and economic success. The value of the deal in billions is entirely irrelevant in the face of this. India, by all means, is playing the long-term game.
Below the 4 likely backbones of India's future light helicopter fleet: the AW109 TrekkerM; the AW169; the Airbus H125; the HAL's LUH.
Hey @grok, if a country has an indigenous light helicopter, including its engine, yet splits a 400-helicopter requirement into three types (200+120+80) including one type that Pakistan is retiring and that would be produced under licence without anything substantial being made in India creating a logistical nightmare, what would you call this: strategic planning or institutional absurdity?

The whole thread is an incredible shit-show.
I wonder if there will be any backlash against notaries. They’re very wealthy, so the left could attack them, and clearly opposed to freedom of enterprise, so the libertarian right should hate them.
Let’s see…

Yeah it’s called workers rights
European hiring rules are genuinely insane.
For example - if you own a company in the Netherlands and one of your employees gets sick, you are required to pay at least 70% of their wages for up to 2 years.
If they can't go back to work after 2 years and you haven't done enough for their reintegration, you pay their wages for 1 more year. And you can't fire them until after that extra year!

Joining forces with @tradexyz
Welcome to our community.
trade[XYZ] and ICE, owner of the New York Stock Exchange, are joining forces to bring 24/7 perpetual futures on Hyperliquid to the United States.
In just over a year, our markets on Hyperliquid have surpassed $650 billion in volume. They provide continuous price discovery for stocks, indices, and commodities, and have become trusted reference points for retail and institutions alike when traditional markets are closed. Much of the world trades them. Until now, Americans could only watch.
We intend to change that. Subject to CFTC approval, trade[XYZ] and ICE plan to establish a new, dedicated U.S. market, with novel exchange and clearing infrastructure built on Hyperliquid. Planned contracts span equities, indices, commodities, FX, and crypto, with access through participating brokers and platforms. We’ll share more on products, eligibility, and timing as approvals progress.
ICE brings more than 25 years of experience operating regulated markets, clearing, and managing risk. trade[XYZ] brings the product development, market design, and technology behind the most liquid and robust markets on Hyperliquid.
Innovation and the protections of U.S. regulation shouldn’t be a trade-off. Together, we plan to prove it.
ICE is making a strategic investment in trade[XYZ] and joins us in building towards the future of Hyperliquid. A small group of market luminaries is joining as well, beginning with Stan Druckenmiller. For more than four decades, few investors have anticipated the great turns in markets as often as Stan. We’re proud to have him with us for the next one.
We’re building the U.S. market in parallel with our existing HIP-3 markets, which we’ll continue to expand and innovate on. We expect both to flourish. They each have a long road map ahead, from new asset classes to new ways to trade them.
To the Hyperliquid community, whether you were here before us or came because of us, thank you. You took a chance on new markets and you made them matter. You’ll forever be a part of this story.
Anything. Anytime. On ICE[XYZ].
