Over the last couple of years in professional baseball there has been a lot of discussion about Batting Average and why current MLB hitters struggle to hit over the magical .300 mark. So... Let's Break Down Batting Average 🧵 1/13

3 years ago, I started at @DrivelineBB I didn’t even know if I wanted to be a hitting coach. And here we are. These are 3 of the biggest things I’ve learned in the last 3 years 🧵

A strike isn't always a good pitch to hit.🧵 Even in advantage counts, hitters don't do much damage on the corners and edges. The damage happens over the middle of the plate. One of the biggest things we use Trajekt for is training that decision.

Saturdays at Driveline, our athletes play full games against the @TrajektSports machine. Real pitch mixing. Real sequencing. Every at-bat built off a scouting report. Game environments off of big league arms weekly.

Best tool there is not even a question!
Some quick clips from myself and @_Chrisleone on how we use our Trajekt at our @DrivelineBB AZ facility, and why getting a lot of reps off it is the best use of your time this offseason. 🧵 First we talked about bat speed training, and how we use blocked sessions off MLB level pitches so hitters can develop the ability to swing faster in difficult environments and learn new moves with a high intent.

There are three phases to the swing: the load phase, the stride phase, and the swing phase. If one phase has an issue, there will be compensations down the chain. Not all compensations are negative (good movers are good problem solvers), BUT if those compensations are leading to ball flight issues, it's important to address them. When evaluating a hitter, find which compensations are causing which ball flight issues. Instead of attacking the compensation itself, work back through the phases to diagnose the root cause. If you don't load right, there will be compensations in the stride and swing phases.

Zach Macdonald came into Driveline with elite potential to build off from his first season in pro ball but needed to make some key adjustments to fully unlock his talent. After making changes in the winter he got off to a hot start in spring training but found himself in a slump midway through the year. Here's a look at his in-season training that allowed him to get back to his spring training form and finish off the year on a tear.

🧵Swing Design Highlights w/ @ChaceBlackmon3 Chaces barrel doesn't enter the hitting zone until out front, due to a lack of separation and poor sequencing stemming from a lack of coil in the load phase. This causes him to have low ball flight pull side and an out-front POC - Here's his last round of the day ✅ Improved ball flight to the pull side ✅Deeper POC

1/ Availability is the first development metric. A pitcher who isn't on the mound can't get better. Three pro pitchers, one full season, zero IL stints. Here's how we managed their workload, why CW drove our decisions, and what it produced. 🧵

Coby Mayo Outlier Bat Path Mayo has the most pull-side Attack Direction in the MLB He also has one of the most vertical Bat Paths — a very unique combination 🧵Some relatively simple adjustments could significantly reduce his whiffs & ks

Joe Mack has shown the potential to be an elite catcher at the MLB level in his rookie season. A high level defender with 74.4mph bat speed and 18.4 Pull Air% is certainly a recipe for success. A path adjustment this offseason to decrease his 49.8 GB%, and increase his 15th percentile LA Sweet Spot could do wonders for Mack next season. His optimized bat path 👇
Joe Mack is the future of the catching position. He's a wizard behind the plate, and his quality of contact numbers are really solid. Stays in the zone and has middling Z-Con and whiff numbers. Once he stops hitting the ball on the ground so much, the ceiling is a top 2 catcher in baseball.

Tired of clipping balls straight up or rolling over to your pullside? With our Skelly viewer we can look at what your path is doing that is causing certain ball flights. Get tested in our lab, and we can figure out why those misses are happening.

In 2026 Heliot Ramos has a 90th percentile HardHit%, 89th percentile Barrel%, 92nd percentile Average Exit Velo. Despite that, his batting run value is in the 9th percentile at -9 runs, down from the 43rd percentile last year. He is hitting the ball hard very often, but despite that his offensive output has seen a sharp decline this year. Why? A quick 🧵...
