She calls for a renewed commitment to the blocโs original Global South perspective and for those objectives to return to the centre of policy and implementation.
With India holding the BRICS presidency, she stresses the responsibility to pursue economic policies that are aligned with the needs and aspirations of people across the South, including at home, while also taking a stronger international stand against the appropriation of the Global South agenda.
She also questions the idea of 'women-led development' when it does not confront the structures that produce inequality. The more urgent task, she argues, is to build an anti-patriarchal framework that shapes every part of economic policy, from debt and finance to monetary policy and employment.

A decade after the New Development Bank (NDB) was created as an alternative to Western-dominated financial institutions, a new report finds that affected communities still have no independent avenue to seek remedy when NDB-funded projects cause social and environmental harm.
The report, ๐๐๐ฒ๐จ๐ง๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ฆ๐ข๐ฌ๐๐ฌ: ๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐จ๐ ๐๐ง๐ฏ๐ข๐ซ๐จ๐ง๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ๐๐ฅ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐จ๐๐ข๐๐ฅ ๐๐จ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ข๐ญ๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ๐ฌ ๐๐ญ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐๐ฐ ๐๐๐ฏ๐๐ฅ๐จ๐ฉ๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ ๐๐๐ง๐ค , highlights major gaps in the bankโs environmental and social safeguards, including the absence of an independent accountability mechanism, weak project-level disclosure, and a disclosure policy that has remained โinterimโ since 2016.
The report also examines projects in India, including the Lamphelpat Waterbody Rejuvenation Project in Manipur and the Indira Gandhi Canal rehabilitation project in Rajasthan, highlighting concerns around environmental damage, livelihood disruption, transparency and community participation.
With roughly $43 billion approved across 139 projects by the end of 2025, the report argues that the NDB must move beyond its promises and establish stronger safeguards, transparency and accountability for the communities affected by its investments.
