From hiding from the Nazis to winning a Nobel Prize! Henri Kagan, a 95-year-old Jewish scientist, has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. As a child during the Holocaust, Kagan and his family survived by hiding under assumed names in a small village in southern France. After the war, he devoted his life to chemistry, eventually becoming one of the world’s leading researchers in his field. In 2001, he received Israel’s prestigious Wolf Prize alongside two scientists who went on to receive that year’s Nobel Prize. Kagan, however, was overlooked. Now, 25 years later, he’s finally receiving that recognition, sharing the Nobel with Japanese scientist Kenso Soai for discoveries with important applications in modern medicine.
