Two years ago today @KemiBadenoch was elected leader of our Party. I was pleased to be one of the first to congratulate her, on behalf of the membership. Since then she has led with clarity, and always recognising the importance of our volunteers. 💙

The King has reminded the Commonwealth that the Royal Navy led the way in ending the transatlantic slave trade. In his speech at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting on Tuesday, he told leaders that the “complex” histories of their forebears must include “the good they did as well as the wrongs”. @Hannah_Furness has more 👇 telegraph.co.uk/royal-family…

After considerable thought, I have resigned my membership of Reform UK and decided to rejoin the Conservative Party. Over recent months, I have become increasingly frustrated with Reform's embrace of left-wing economic policies, growing social conservatism, and a concerning shift towards nationalism, particularly its support for protectionist measures such as tariffs. I have also become disillusioned with the apparent lack of tolerance for internal criticism. Having previously received ridicule from Reform supporters for defending the principle that being gay or transgender should never be a crime, I have increasingly questioned whether my commitment to individual liberty is shared by those around me. Ultimately, my political ideology has not changed. I remain committed to individual liberty, free-market economics, limited government, and personal responsibility. Rather, I believe Reform UK has moved away from the principles that initially attracted me to the party. Whilst I recognise that the Conservatives are far from perfect, I believe they offer greater opportunities for open debate, constructive criticism, and the advancement of my political beliefs. @Conservatives

Slavery was an evil in which people from every continent and region participated. We should be honest about the whole history, not select the parts that are politically convenient today, especially given Britain's leading role in ending the transatlantic slave trade. If Caribbean countries are asking Britain for a formal apology for Britain’s role in the transatlantic slave trade, will they also be asking the same of the descendants of African kingdoms, rulers and merchants who captured, sold and profited from the trade? On demands for reparations, whether through cash or debt relief, we have been down this track before. Twenty-five years ago, Jubilee 2000, Drop the Debt and Make Poverty History argued that cancelling the debts of poorer countries would give them a fresh start. More than $100 billion of debt was eventually written off, but many of those countries have since built up even bigger debts. Labour are already spending too much on Britain's welfare state, now is not the time for Andy Burnham to be providing global welfare. There is no reason British taxpayers today should be held financially responsible for things that happened generations before any of us were born. And I have even less patience for political elites in commonwealth countries who don’t know how to make their own citizens prosperous now looking for another opportunity to blame Britain. As Prime Minister, Andy Burnham should be Britain’s greatest defender. Instead, he is writing articles saying we need to confront our history (as if we haven't done enough of that) and considering another formal historical apology. Tony Blair already expressed Britain’s deep sorrow and regret for our role in the slave trade nearly twenty years ago. There is no need to do so again. This is all another navel-gazing distraction. The Commonwealth should be looking forward, not endlessly backwards. That means economic partnerships to make us all richer and deeper military and security cooperation against common threats. If every Commonwealth summit becomes an exercise in presenting Britain with demands for cash then we need to start asking if it is worth the effort.

Last year, I warned that water reserves at Wimbleball were critically low at 29%; today, they are 13%. We haven’t taken water security seriously enough, and it is families and businesses that will suffer. We must urgently expand and build new water storage.
Exclusive from @breeallegretti Ministers have been secretly warned that some English reservoirs are at risk of running dry, hitting water supplies to homes in the run-up to Christmas The government’s emergency committee, known as Cobra, is meeting up to twice a week to discuss the situation in the southwest of England and Sussex A secret “reasonable worst-case scenario” was drawn up, anticipating that several reservoirs’ water stocks could fall to 0 per cent — dubbed “day zero” — within weeks Officials warned that without action, supplies to some homes could be affected, along with disruption to the construction of a nuclear power station and operations at a prison Wimbleball reservoir, which supplies more than 400,000 people in Somerset, has 13 per cent of its capacity, while Ardingly, which serves 280,000 customers across West Sussex, is at 17 per cent Ministers battling to avoid reservoirs running dry by Christmas thetimes.com/article/7812e10…

This is yet another example of Burnham’s foot in mouth syndrome. He hasn’t thought this through or the implications. Most people who voted for Brexit did so because they didn’t want free movement. Too many politicians have failed to understand the significance and impact of immigration on communities. We have had more than enough experience of what happens when politicians (including previous Conservative governments) promise control but fail to deliver it. The answer is to learn from those mistakes, not reopen free movement.
🔺 EXCLUSIVE: Andy Burnham has opened the door to Britain readopting the European Union’s free movement rules, arguing that an “honest discussion” is needed, reports @benrileysmith

On Tuesday 20th October, Crewkerne lost Lucy Silcocks. She was just 32. Lucy was Joshua Bonehill-Paine's fiancée, his best friend and, in his words, his soulmate. They met in the summer of 2019, got engaged the following February, and built their life together here in Crewkerne, the town that inspired the Crewkerne Gazette, which Joshua co-founded. Above everything, Lucy was a mum. She doted on their three boys, Leo (6), Max (5) and Jack (2), and they were the centre of her world. She was a gifted artist, quick to laugh, and the heart of their home. Lucy took her own life. Her loss has devastated Joshua and the boys, and Joshua is struggling to find a way forward without her. Joshua wants Lucy to have the send-off she deserves, in the town they called home. But alongside the cost of her funeral, the family has lost the income that kept a roof over their heads, and Christmas is only weeks away. Nothing can bring Lucy back. But your kindness can give her a farewell worthy of her, and ease some of the hardship facing Leo, Max and Jack in the hardest winter of their young lives. Every donation, however small, and every share means more than we can say. All money raised will go towards Lucy's funeral and supporting the boys through the months ahead. A massive thank you on behalf of Joshua and the boys, who will be very grateful of your support during this incredibly difficult time. Thank you, Katie.
Yesterday, I voted against the Government's disgraceful plan to open up Northern Ireland veterans to lawfare, decades after their service. These brave men risked their lives to keep us safe from terrorism. The least that their Government can do is have their backs.

Hello, @reformparty_uk HQ! 👋 I see in the latest edition of The Reformer you’re proposing to send in the Royal Navy to stop the boats. One small problem… you might want to choose a ship that’s still in service! I’d suggest retiring your defence spokesperson too, but then I remembered… you don’t have one! Schoolboy error! 😂⚓

The replies to Joshua’s post are disgusting. You can offer condolences without an “although” or a “but” and just leave it as it is. Your opinions on how a man deals with his grief is irrelevant unless you have faced that situation yourself. I’m so, so very sorry my friend.
Yesterday in Plymouth, whilst Farage was publicly attacking me, I was facing something far greater. Lucy, my partner of seven years and the mother of my three children, had taken her own life. Lucy had been struggling with her mental health since the summer. She stood by me through every change I made. When we met, after I had served three years in prison, she didn't judge me. She saw who I was trying to become. Whilst Farage and other Reform MPs had been criticising and condemning me none of them chose to mention that I have spent the last eight years working against the extremism I once embraced. We had seven wonderful years together. But the press attention was hard on her: the knocks at the door, the comments, the remarks from figures in and around Reform UK, including Raheem Kassam, Nigel Farage and Robert Jenrick. It weighed heavily on her that her life was being shaped by mistakes I made a decade ago. Lucy was the love of my life and my soulmate. She is irreplaceable. Our boys will grow up knowing how much their mother loved them, and their care now rests with me.
