Someone clever (@upandoutcomic) asked people "When did you realize you didn’t have to identify as the gender you were assigned at birth? What made that ol' mental lightbulb turn on?" This short thread was my reply: threadreaderapp.com/thread/1…

“There are political repressions taking place. Now they’ve reached us.” Journalist and Nobel laureate Dmitry Muratov tells me how the Russian authorities have “strangled” Russia’s most prominent independent newspaper. Novaya Gazeta is closing down. #ReadingRussia

Given his long-time proven commitment to a free press⬇️, one might ask if Alexander Lebedev is sanctioned in the West simply because he is Russian & once worked for the KGB.
It's probably surprising that Novaya Gazeta has only completely closed down now, given how much Russia has changed since February 2022. Over its 33-year history, the newspaper employed some of Russia’s best-known liberal journalists, including Anna Politkovskaya, Yuri Shchekochikhin, Elena Milashina and @YLatynina. It was initially financed partly through money from Mikhail Gorbachev’s Nobel Peace Prize (co-founder and long-time editor Dmitry Muratov would land the same award in 2021) and In 2006, businessman Alexander Lebedev (who later acquired Britain’s Evening Standard and Independent newspapers) bought a 39% stake, while Gorbachev took 10%. The editorial staff retained the remaining 51%. Lebedev reportedly invested millions of dollars in the struggling newspaper, helping it expand while pledging not to interfere with its editorial independence (a promise that Muratov said he upheld). Novaya Gazeta's relationship with Russian authorities was always difficult, but as recently as 2013 (then PM) Dmitry Medvedev sent it official congratulations on its 20th anniversary. Putin also congratulated Muratov on his Nobel Prize in October 2021. Several people associated with Novaya Gazeta were murdered, including Politkovskaya in 2006, and Moscow designated Muratov a “foreign agent” in 2023, after which he stood down as editor. Ironically, despite his support for independent media, Lebedev himself has been sanctioned by Canada and banned from the EU in recent years.

The horrific screams of "Tato! Tato!" (meaning "Dad! Dad!") will haunt my dreams forever. Russian terrorism must be stopped. It must be! To strike a busy railway station full of civilians just to punish us is completely inhuman, next-level barbarism. I struggle to convey my disgust, my rage... and sorrow. Why was it done, why kill people like this? To say "we are letting Oleshky evacuate, but we will still keep murdering you?" I cant wrap my mind around it. I can't. Why? Why?? 14 people are dead after the russian strike on a railway station in Dnipro.

Hero.
Fox: Why are you here this morning? Trump rally attendee: Well, in the late 70s, I was a little too young to go to South America for the Jonestown Massacre. But this is as close as I'll ever get, so that's why I'm here. There's nothing like seeing a cult right up front.

Ukrainian publishing house KSD has released video showing the destruction of its warehouse after a Russian attack on October 27. According to KSD, approximately 300,000 books were housed at the site. The extent of the salvagable stock is still unknown, as heavy smoke damaged even the copies left untouched by flames and water. Russia has been burning Ukrainian books, banning our language, repressing and executing writers for centuries in attempts to erase our culture and language.

NEW: Angie Nixon is running for Senate on a huge bet: Medicare for All can win over Trump voters in Florida. To put that theory to the test, we brought Nixon to one of the unhealthiest counties in Florida — where 1 in 5 lives in poverty, thousands are uninsured, and doctors are few and far between.
