#ChatControl masterclass in undermining democratic legitimacy. EU Parliament rejected mass-scanning of citizens' messages. Its president's answer? Use an exceptional procedure & force a new vote under rules that make rejection much harder than approval. politico.eu/article/roberta-…

Excerpt from @elastic's global threat report - I've said it before and I'll say it again, controls such as network segmentation will protect you significantly more than being about to detect the hottest new technique.

This is going to remind a bunch of cybersecurity startups that adding an agent to users machines is a crazy big responsibility…

It’s been 10 years since Russian murderers shot down the MH17 passenger plane in the skies over Ukraine. The whole world witnessed then who came to wage war against Ukraine and that Russian evil is a threat not only to us but to all. 298 people were killed, including 80 children—citizens of a dozen countries from different parts of the world. Russia’s accountability for this atrocity is inevitable. Everyone guilty of this and other Russian war crimes will undoubtedly hear the verdicts they deserve. Eternal memory to all victims of Russian aggression. ____ @United24media

Respectfully, your proposal does break encryption. I am happy to spend as much time as you need reviewing in as much detail as you are comfortable with exactly how it breaks encryption, and why this is so dangerous.
Let me clarify one thing about our draft law to detect online child sexual abuse #CSAM. Our proposal is not breaking encryption. Our proposal preserves privacy and any measures taken need to be in line with EU privacy laws.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The proposal to scan all digital communication of all EU citizens is not privacy preserving. It is condemned by academics, privacy regulators, and the internal legal experts at the Council of the European Union for its gross violation of privacy. docs.google.com/document/d/13A… edri.org/our-work/open-… edpb.europa.eu/our-work-tools… netzpolitik.org/2023/juristisc… theguardian.com/world/2023/may…

📣Official statement: the new EU chat controls proposal for mass scanning is the same old surveillance with new branding. Whether you call it a backdoor, a front door, or “upload moderation” it undermines encryption & creates significant vulnerabilities signal.org/blog/pdfs/upload-…

This showcases the European issue in tech. Our fragmented home market and Brussel’s deliberate action to prevent the formation of European global champions have lead to our absence in these and many other tech related rankings.

This talk, where @mikko interview @thegrugq about opsec, the xz-backdoor, state sponsored attacks and cyber-warfare in Ukraine, is the most interresting cybertalk I have watched for a very long time. Nuanced and detailed about complex topics. Thanks! youtu.be/3w7E4Hhtubw?si=_JXw…

This is impottant: European governments say they’re going to do “targeted scanning” on encrypted messaging apps, but their plan is to build a mass surveillance system while using the word “targeted” to placate politicians who are concerned.
Replying to @bpreneel1
So-called targeted detection will affect billions of users on widely used apps such as WhatsApp and Signal. 3/10
