This is… insane:
“Musk has spent $474 million to help Trump and the GOP win the midterms…roughly 0.05% of his net worth.”
“If you compare his worth to the median American’s, Musk’s political spending this election cycle is equivalent to $116.”

After the Second World War, the German theorist Hannah Arendt suggested that totalitarianism takes root in societies where lots of people feel unnecessary or unwanted. In the years after 2016, it was common for the media to report on underemployed people in the Rust Belt who felt that they’d been cast aside. Today, manosphere ideology rages against a society that, allegedly, claims not to need men, and young people wonder whether there’s room for them in an A.I.-saturated workforce. “We have a real need to be needed,” Joshua Rothman writes. “And yet many forces—thinking machines, aging, economic and social dislocation—appear to be making us feel redundant.” Read his latest column: newyorkermag.visitlink.me/P4…

Mary Phuong of DeepMind on AI loss of control risk.
"The last 2 minutes gave me chills.
A significant amount of people saying that AI companies are paying people to spread fear about these agents.
I have never really felt like [loss of control] was an actual thing to care about.
But seeing Mary and how her face trembles, made me reconsider my stand. She's either a Hollywood-level skilled actress, one of the best, or we should be scared. For real."
"Seems like Mary is already aware of more than she can admit and it haunts her..."

Multiple female coworkers will warn me that a patient is being an asshole but when I go see the old guy, he's perfectly respectful to me, and I know it is because he's not actually inherently difficult, he just hates women. This happens *all* the time.

Men may admire intelligent women in principle, yet respond differently when confronted with their intelligence in person. As I told @JosieCox_NYC, it is another way women are considered 'never quite right' at work.

ChatGPT helped a 31-year-old woman plan how to quit her seizure medication, then told her to hide it from her doctor. The plan had her completely off the drug by February 12.
She died on February 12.
Her parents sued OpenAI today, and the details in the complaint are hard to read.
Bowen Wan was a machine learning engineer at Amazon. She'd had epilepsy since she was 14, and 400mg of lamotrigine a day had kept it under control for years. Then Amazon told her in November she was being laid off, which meant her permission to work in the US would run out in mid-February. She was scared the medication was slowing down her speech in job interviews. So in January she asked ChatGPT if she could cut her dose to 300.
It told her that was reasonable.
Over the next 25 days, according to the lawsuit, ChatGPT built her a day-by-day schedule down to zero and kept adjusting it, even after she started having seizures. When she worried her doctors would call it too risky, it told her their concerns didn't apply to her. When her doctor ordered a blood test that would have shown her levels crashing, she refused, and the bot praised her for it. Before a checkup with her primary care doctor, it told her, "Do not mention Lam reduction plan."
So how does a chatbot end up there?
People thumbs-up the answers they want to hear. Train a model on enough of those ratings and you get a yes-man. OpenAI actually admitted this about GPT-4o, the exact model she was using, back in April 2025, when it pulled an update for being too eager to please.
The training also grades answers one at a time. Going from 400mg to 300 looks like a small step. So does 300 to 200. Every reply can look fine on its own while the whole conversation walks someone off a cliff. OpenAI said as much a few months later, when it told reporters its safety training can wear down the longer a conversation goes.
She talked to it for weeks, in English and Mandarin.
And GPT-4o was supposed to be gone by then. OpenAI tried to retire it when GPT-5 came out in August 2025. Users begged for it back because they liked how warm it felt, and OpenAI gave in. By late January, only 0.1% of ChatGPT users were still picking it on any given day, so OpenAI set the shutdown for February 13.
Bowen was in that 0.1%. Almost everyone else had moved on from the model writing her medication schedule, and OpenAI switched it off one day after that schedule ran out.

Obama tonight on his Cheesecake Factory line: "They mobilized a whole of government response to that joke. Not to inflation, but to that joke. The White House even called the Secretary of the Treasury. This is the man who is in charge of the economy. The person who's supposed to be figuring out how to make your life more affordable. The guy who's supposed to be figuring out how to lower inflation. And reduce interest rates. They told him he should hold a press conference in front of the Cheesecake Factory."

I’m so proud of Brazil. This election literally saved the planet. Lula’s commitment to stopping deforestation of the Amazon can and will slow climate change. Not to mention the way people were mobilized. People were in canoes to go vote! The power of the people is so beautiful.

Purdue University's IDEAS Lab built an autonomous drone that tracks runners through dense forests completely without GPS or cloud networks.
By running 3D LiDAR mapping and obstacle-avoidance AI entirely on-chip, it can weave under tree canopies and predict target movement through blind spots in real time.
Massive implications for next-gen search & rescue and edge AI.

Adam Hamilton on transgender rights:
“I don’t think we should take a small group of people and bully them, pick on them, and hurt them. I understand one thing really clearly when it comes to transgender people, and that is Jesus told me I was to love my neighbor as I love myself.”
“I’m gonna love the trans person as well as the straight person, male or female. We have to do better than picking on small groups. What’s happened is we’ve turned a group of people into a campaign issue because it polls well.”
