I’m going to make an argument that some Nebraska fans will think is absolutely ridiculous. Saturday night’s game against Oregon might be the biggest game in Nebraska football history. Yes, I know our history. I know about the national championship games, the Game of the Century, the Orange Bowls, and the battles with Oklahoma. Those games had championships and legacies on the line. But hear me out. Nebraska has spent the better part of two decades trying to find its way back to national relevance. We’ve changed coaches, coordinators, quarterbacks, and entire philosophies. We’ve heard about rebuilding, culture changes, and turning corners more times than any of us care to remember. Every time it feels like we’re getting close, something happens that reminds us just how far we still have to go. Saturday night feels different. A win at Oregon would send Nebraska into the bye week at 6-1, rather than sitting at 5-2 with back-to-back losses and another two weeks of wondering whether this program is actually progressing. It would put a 10-2 regular season squarely within reach. It would keep the College Football Playoff conversation alive. Think about that for a second. Nebraska. In the playoff conversation. In November. But I think the implications go even further. Imagine what a win like this could do for recruiting. What it could mean in the transfer portal. Imagine the momentum heading into an offseason where Nebraska isn’t selling recruits on what this program could become, but showing them REAL evidence of what it’s becoming. And then imagine entering 2027 with legitimate expectations of competing at the highest level again. That’s what I believe is at stake Saturday night. A loss wouldn’t erase the progress Nebraska has made. But a win could accelerate everything. We’ve spent years waiting for the game that finally changes the conversation around Nebraska football. Maybe this is it. Not because a trophy is being handed out in Eugene. Not because a national championship will be decided. But because Saturday night could be the moment Nebraska stops talking about getting back and actually starts getting there.
