First known US case: American charged for using a “duress” password
Samuel Tunick, an Atlanta resident, is being prosecuted for allegedly giving border agents a passcode that wiped his phone.
The feature comes from GrapheneOS, a privacy-focused Android OS. Entering the duress code triggers a full factory reset.
This is believed to be the first time federal prosecutors have brought such charges.
The incident happened in January 2025 at Atlanta airport. Agents demanded access to his phone without a warrant, saying he hadn’t yet officially entered the US. When they entered the code, the phone wiped itself.
Tunick has pleaded not guilty. His lawyers argue the seizure was unlawful and that agents were investigating his activism against “Cop City.”
The case raises big questions about digital rights at the US border.
What do you think?

Hate has no place Uptown and in the Bronx, nor in our politics.
Tomorrow, we have a choice: keep the hateful politics of the past, or welcome a new day Uptown and in the Bronx.
Surrogates of the campaign against Darializa have been peddling in anti-Black racism, specifically against Haitians. This has even included calling Darializa Haitian as though that were a slur. I condemn the vile racism in @EspaillatNY’s camp, and call on him to do the same.

Ethiopia, Africa’s second-most populous nation, stands deeply divided, facing violent ethnic conflicts, restrictions on free speech and crackdowns on dissent.
As the country heads toward a national election, the leader once celebrated as a healer is now viewed by critics as the main driver of these schisms. cnn.it/3RvMmbw

While not everything is about Eskinder, there are people I will never respect for the smear campaign they carried out. The merciless attacks, dehumanization, & vindictiveness are unforgivable. Some of the most hateful & intellectually dishonest individuals I’ve encountered, both personally & on this platform.
What’s sad is that Eskinder says he holds no grudge against them. I can’t say the same. In their obsession with consolidating power, they drained the struggle of its essence, destroyed morale, & turned their propaganda machine against their own people. The public is exhausted. That’s why protests barely draw crowds anymore, & many of the brightest minds have left social media & organizations.
What’s mind blowing is watching people who once raged endlessly against Eskinder now give center stage to a man who repeatedly denied the very existence of Amharas.
Two Men, Two Legacies, One People
On one side is Andargachew: a man who spent much of his political life aligned with ideas and systems that left the Amhara politically weakened, marginalized, and denied a clear voice of their own. He never recognized the Amhara as a people with legitimate political grievances and aspirations but instead reduced them to little more than Amharic speakers. He accommodated narratives that painted “Neftegna” as a stain to be ashamed of rather than challenged the deeper ideological hostility that made anti-Amhara sentiment acceptable in Ethiopia's political discourse.
And yet today, history delivers one of its strange ironies: the same man now appears before international audiences as a representative of the very people whose identity he denies.
Then there is Eskinder Nega.
A man who saw danger long before many others did.
Long before the Amhara suffering became impossible to ignore, he believed something much deeper was unfolding, that what was being built in Ethiopia was not simply a new political system but an ideological order that would steadily isolate, weaken, and suffocate the Amhara people.
While others adjusted themselves to changing political realities, Eskinder chose confrontation.
He told Amharas not to accept humiliation as destiny. He called on them to remember who they were, to reclaim their dignity, and to refuse political extinction (አማራ ታሪኩን ያድሳል).
And for that, he paid heavily. He was jailed. Silenced. Mocked.
And when peaceful political avenues were exhausted, when the promise of ለውጥ began to look less like reform and more like performance, he made the life-altering decision to join and help shape the Amhara Fano struggle.
But perhaps the most painful part of his story is not what his enemies did. Enemies are expected to attack.
The real heartbreak is what happened at the hands of those who should have understood him best.
People who once praised him later isolated him. People who knew his sacrifices turned against him. People who should have respectfully disagreed with him politically, if they must, without erasing his decades of struggle.
This is not really just about two men.
It is about us. About our collective memory. About who we have to stand with and against. About whether we know how to honor sacrifice, or whether we only celebrate people when it is convenient.
Because one of the hardest truths in any struggle is this:
Sometimes the wounds that take the longest to heal are not the ones inflicted by your enemies.
They are the ones inflicted by your own.

New York, let's get organized.
In a city of over 8 million, just 400 people showed up to speak at the last Rent Guidelines Board hearing — where decisions about rents are made.
We can do better.
If we want a city that works for tenants and landlords alike, we need New Yorkers to show up and make their voices heard.
The next hearings are this June. Visit ORGANIZE.NYC.GOV to get involved.

Please study the Qur'ān. I beg you, don't just listen to the sweet voices or just read in Arabic. Study it in your preferred language and make sure to think over it.
Muslims are thinkers. Muslims are ponderers. Muslims are readers. Pleased read. Read Islamic contents. Read Islamic History. Read Islamic legislations. Please read, as a Muslim.
There's so much abundance of knowledge, nuance and guidance in this deen that will never be exhausted. And the fun fact is that all of them are derived from the Qur'ān. All with basis and rulings. This is why scholars derive immense depths and benefits from verses you would randomly skim past on a windy Tuesday evening.
Please, read the Qur’ān. Please. May Allah grant you steadfastness upon haqq.
