On first blush, I love the idea of increasing competition in the finance and insurance sectors, to both create more options for Canadians, to give our companies access to other markets, and make payments between Canada and Europe more seamless.
Mark Carney say he wants Canada to become an associate member of the EU by June 2027 #cdnpoli
Here are some of the concrete examples Canada and the EU gave as what that would actually mean
- Canada joining Erasmus+, the students and youth exchange program
- They signed a digital trade agreement, that Carney says will make payments between Canada and EU countries easier
- They are exploring opening the banking, insurance and fintech sectors up.
- Canada is negotiating to join Galileo, which is a global navigation satellite system
- They are discussing potential new transatlantic and potentially transarctic data cables, as per Carney
Slovenia understood the assignment. Still nine national parliaments left to do the same.
🇸🇮 The National Assembly of the Republic of Slovenia 🇸🇮 today adopted the law ratifying the EU–Canada 🇪🇺-🇨🇦 Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (#CETA), reaffirming Slovenia’s commitment to a strong and rules-based EU trade policy.
CETA has been provisionally applied since September 2017.

Perhaps we can focus on getting the remaining 10 national parliaments to finally ratify CETA as a next step so that these ambitions don't just all die in the realm of memes.
🚨 Just in: The term "associate membership" has been dropped from the EU-Canada declaration at the insistence of Germany.
The concept has been replaced by a commitment to "ever closer association", @BertuzLuca reports.
Huge blow for Ursula von der Leyen.

fees like lots of fiddling, short-term things, new complications - a 'young entrepreneurs allowance', 'starter ISA', different business rates exemption threshold for retail, leisure & hospitality ... etc . I don't hear a clear, coherent vision or a simplification of tax system

Bisher fehlt noch ein überzeugender Kandidat für das Bundespräsidentenamt, der die Demokraten und die Generationen einen kann. Das muss nicht so bleiben. @OrdoliberalBG wäre eine spannende und hervorragende Wahl.

The Eurostar would be much better if we just shifted to on-board passport controls without making passengers stand in line waiting for an hour.
That's also how it worked on Swiss cross-border connections before Schengen.
