🌍 Moyo Landlords in Moyo district voiced frustration over a recurring practice of URA staff engaging their tenants directly before speaking with them. According to the landlords, this approach sometimes results in inaccurate information reaching URA, potentially leading to incorrect tax assessments said Sulaiman Ibrahim Waikango, a Moyo landlord. The concern emerged during a sector-based tax education engagement on rental income tax, held with landlords in Moyo district today. Participants also called on URA to widen the tax base, citing the burden of multiple overlapping tax obligations. "Some of us are carrying a huge tax burden coming from the various taxes we pay — property tax, income tax, and rental tax — which drain our businesses. Why don't you widen the tax base?" asked landlord Okunzi Richard. Responding to the concerns, Muzamil Aluma, Supervisor of Tax Education, acknowledged that the tax base remains relatively lean but noted it is expanding steadily as URA works to grow the taxpayers' register. On the issue of tenant engagement, Aluma encouraged landlords to voluntarily disclose their records and any new information directly to URA, to reduce reliance on second-hand data for tax purposes. "Right now, URA has changed, and we are progressing towards distributing the tax burden by bringing more taxpayers onto the register. We will also meet you, like we are doing here, to get firsthand information that informs our tax decisions," Aluma said.
