The Government canât have its cake and eat it.
You cannot point to Europe to justify a new tourism tax while conveniently ignoring how Europe taxes hospitality.
A tourism tax of up to 5% on top of 20% VAT means the headline tax burden could effectively reach 25%.
Yes Europe has tourism taxes, but Europe also recognises the economic value of hospitality and tourism with substantially lower VAT rates.
If we want European-style tourism taxes then give us European-style VAT.
Stop picking the bits of Europe that raise taxes while ignoring the bits that help hospitality grow.

Iâve been saying this for a very long time.
- The Tax burden is too much.
We are asking for a ÂŁ2.5BN tax cut, against over ÂŁ1BN written off this year alone in liquidations in our industry.

Of course we want to deliver the 100,000 jobs @UKHofficial has pledged. Of course we can.
But hospitality had already lost an estimated 100,000 jobs following Labourâs October 2024 Budget. Weâd be rebuilding employment weâve already lost.
If this Labour government thinks for one second that hospitality has the money sitting around to fund another 100,000 jobs without cutting VAT, itâs got another thing coming.
Businesses are fighting to pay the staff theyâve still got. A press release doesnât pay wages.
I understand showing willing. We want to give young people opportunities. But UKHospitalityâs response should have been clear:
âYes, weâll deliver 100,000 jobs. Cut VAT in line with Europe and give us the means to do it.â
You cannot keep taxing employment out of existence then expect applause for asking us to create it again.

There wonât be much of a sector left if we donât get a #VatCut in this budget. #VatinlinewithEurope @allen_m_simpson - pushing this can down the road just isnât an option. The campaign will have to change dramatic course if a VatCut is not in this coming budget.

How would we do that?
â
ď¸ An Essential Energy Guarantee to slash bills, with extra support for the most vulnerable
â
ď¸ A 10p fuel duty cut to drop petrol prices and public transport fares
â
ď¸ A 5p cut to hospitality VAT
Will you take a stance on VAT for Hosptiality then?
It is a simple -
- Yes we would cut vat for Hospitality.
- No, we wouldnât.

Last night I was at the Fellows Dinner for the @IoH_Online celebrating all that is good in our industry. Was a brilliant evening.
Today I will be in @UKParliament ensuring that final push is made for #VatInLineWithEurope
Weâve spoken to the Treasury. The money is there to do it (ÂŁ3Bn - @bournemouthuni Vat cut to 13% for small business ).
The Cabinet, the PM and the Chancellor have had the paper.
The question is there their the political will to do it. @andyburnham
If not, why not? And If not, how will our industry react? Will we roll overâŚ. Weâve been a united industry with one clear ask, if that ask isnât delivered, then we have not been listened to and they donât care. Itâs that simple.
