The roof of this Upper West Side water tank was removed earlier today, destroying an active nest of the well-known Barn Owl family that lived there, despite federal and state laws protecting such nests. The DEC is on site to investigate.

Brian May resigned from the RSPCA, the organisation created specifically to protect animals from cruelty, because he no longer believed it was doing enough to prevent that cruelty. His decision, announced on Instagram, quickly turned into something much bigger. Ricky Gervais and Joanna Lumley joined other celebrities in calling for change, more than 60 animal protection organisations signed a petition, the RSPCA opened an internal investigation, and its own Chief Executive eventually announced that he would step down. May had served as a Vice President of the RSPCA since 2012. For twelve years he had raised money and campaigned for animal welfare. But in September 2024 he learned what had been happening on some farms carrying the RSPCA Assured label. Investigations had uncovered overcrowding, poor hygiene, and cases of physical abuse on more than 40 certified farms. Major supermarkets were signed up to the scheme, so customers could see the RSPCA label and believe they were paying extra for higher standards. May gave the organisation time to respond. In the end he felt the response was completely inadequate. On September 26, 2024, he posted his resignation letter on Instagram. “It is with profound sadness and not without massive soul-searching that today I have to offer my resignation as a vice-president of the RSPCA. Good folks out there are still paying extra for animal produce with the RSPCA sticker on it — thinking they are protecting farm animals from cruelty. In the end there was no other option for me.” The following day Bryan Adams, Moby, Ricky Gervais, Joanna Lumley and others signed an open letter urging the RSPCA to abandon the scheme. More than 60 animal protection organisations signed it. The RSPCA launched an internal review and its Chief Executive announced he would step down by the end of the year. Brian May walked away from the animal protection organisation he had supported for twelve years because he believed it was not providing enough protection to animals. And somehow there may be no decision more perfectly Brian May than that.

These penguins urgently need us to listen to this. Chinstrap penguin numbers on Zavodovski Island have plummeted by two-thirds since 2011 as warming waters have driven away their krill. “It is an enormous population crash, equivalent to half a million breeding individuals being lost from that island,” said research lead Professor Norman Ratcliffe, a penguin ecologist at the British Antarctic Survey.

Why would it be a waste of resources to try to stop the torture of hundreds of thousands of animals a year, which the author herself here seems to acknowledge is unconscionable? I’m reminded of @astradisastra, @AaronRegunberg, + @FightFascismPod’s discussion of the feeling 1/

No matter what prayer tune you put in the background, no matter how much you paint a little terrified baby, you can't romanticise this cruelty! This baby is going to spend the next minimum 50 years in isolated captivity! #WhyTheChains #NoElephantsInTemples #StopElephantCaptivity

Dogs aren't lab equipment. They're family. Right now, breeders are mating dogs to supply taxpayer-funded labs with puppies, some as young as three months old. We introduced the PUPPS Act to end it. No more breeding dogs for research. No more supply to the labs. And every dog already in the system gets a shot at adoption, not euthanasia. Man's best friend belongs in a loving home, not a lab. 🐶

Remember what happened last time Trump delisted wolves? It unleashed what the former director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service—who'd previously been in favor of delisting wolves—described as the “epidemic of cruelty” and "ecocide." As a result, he forcefully called for: 1. Immediately restore federal ESA protection for wolves, using the emergency-listing provision. 2. Appoint a qualified permanent FWS director capable of providing science-based leadership. Their ESA protection was restored under Biden after a federal court overturned Trump's delisting—but Trump casually trashes it again: Trump has ordered the Interior Department to remove ESA protections for gray wolves and Mexican wolves, while also directing agencies to make it easier to kill wolves. ‼️ Alley Cat Allies supports the prosecution of Chaim Gubitz, who was arrested and charged with animal cruelty for fatally poisoning two cats in Biscayne Park, Florida. ‼️ We reached out to the prosecutor in his case to urge the maximum sentence and offer the support of our team of animal cruelty experts. Gubitz was allegedly caught on surveillance camera leaving poisoned trays of food along the fence, where his neighbor's two pet cats were able to access them. The cats, Little and Stella, did not survive. Poisoning is an especially disturbing cause of death that causes its victims extreme suffering. To leave out poison for any animal IS cruelty. Learn how to take action if you suspect a cat has been poisoned and recognize the symptoms of poisoning at alleycat.org/Poison.

The insects are gone. Three billion birds lost since 1970. No food. No prey. No sound. I still circle the fields, but the ecosystem beneath me has collapsed. When you spray your lawn, you're not just killing weeds or bugs. You're breaking the entire food chain from the ground up.

This is gutwrenching 😰 😭. She's starving. She's eating bread.....we've destroyed her home. We are not mankind. We are destroyers.
