No, equality and fairness are achieved when service delivery, especially of infrastructure, generates investment and jobs, bringing in more money for more service delivery. That’s why Cape Town provides more services, more infrastructure and more support to poor people than any ANC city anywhere.
OPINION | "The morality question is very important, because what has happened in this election by the DA particularly, is to tell us that politics doesn’t matter in this election, service delivery does. No, Politics does matter because it directs where service delivery goes, how justice is dispensed, and how equality and fairness is achieved." - says @LukhonaMnguni, @Rise_Mzansi Johannesburg mayoral candidate. Three waves of ballistic missiles have been launched at Kyiv by Russian “humanitarians” since yesterday evening. They used 21 missiles. Unfortunately, numerous sites across the city have been hit and damaged: ordinary residential buildings, energy facilities, infrastructure at one of the railway stations and the metro, shopping malls, and businesses. Even a monastery is among the damaged sites. Our emergency services are working at all the affected locations. Twelve of our regions came under Russian attack overnight. In Kyiv and across the regions, 34 people were injured, including five children. As of now, two people have been confirmed killed. My condolences to their families and loved ones. Almost immediately after another round of talks, Russia launched a pointed attack. This means there has been no real change in its attitude toward everything that is happening. It is important to keep trying to find the right solutions to end this war. But when Russia responds to negotiations with ballistic missiles, real pressure on Russia is needed to bring about different steps – steps toward ending the killing. Stronger air defenses and the rapid delivery of missiles, the ability to destroy ballistic missile launchers, sanctions over the war – all of this must be in place. I am grateful to everyone who sees the situation for what it is and acknowledges the reality. The aggressor deserves to be treated accordingly. Ukraine deserves support. People's lives deserve protection. Thank you to everyone who stands with Ukraine!

We suspected this was the reason Ukraine’s access to Starshield was restricted. But to see it from senior officials in this reporting is still utterly unconscionable. Let’s be absolutely clear about what this means. The Trump Administration deliberately restricted technology Ukraine relies on to intercept Russian drones and ballistic missiles. It made it harder for Ukraine to defend itself and easier for Russia to carry out its deadly attacks against Ukrainian civilians. They knew exactly what was at stake. They knew that more Russian drones and missiles would get through, allowing Russia to kill even more Ukrainians. And yet they went ahead anyway. This is a deliberate weaking of Ukraine’s defenses that only Russia will benefit from. It is a betrayal of our ally that this Administration cannot wash its hands of. The American people deserve to know who made this decision, why they made it, and how they can possibly justify putting more innocent Ukrainian lives in the crosshairs of Putin’s war machine. reuters.com/world/europe/ord…

Traditions in the West. On the left we have a strand that runs from Rousseau through Robesspire and Saint-Juste and through Marxist-Leninism to Stalin, who had of course stopped any pretense at being for “the people” or the helping the hand of history and exemplified nothing more than the will to power. It ends with the Gulag. On the right we have a tradition that marries attachment to authoritarianism (the pre-reformation church; monarchy) with the Romantic response to the enlightenment, which gave rise to the identitarian politics of the right, including nationalism, nativism and ultimately fascism. Again, it ends with the naked will to power. It ends with Auschwitz. Then there is the liberal tradition, with a small “l”. Conservatives, social democrats, many western socialists and of course liberals with a big “L” belong to this tradition, which draws a belief in reason from the enlightenment and a belief in the uniqueness of individuals from Romanticism. This is the tradition that gives us the US Revolution, rather than the French version. It’s the tradition that gives us respect for reason, human rights, separation of powers, market economics, the welfare state (broadly defined) and universal franchise. It’s the tradition that gives us much of South Africa’s constitution, too. That third tradition is the one that has delivered freedom and prosperity to the West, and for those non-western countries (South Korea, Japan, etc) that have embraced the universal values on which it is founded. And it is the tradition that needs defending now, from both anti-democratic, authoritarian left and ethno-nationalist, authoritarian right. It needs defending in the West, but also right here in South Africa. This tradition is of course not without its own faults as the history of colonialism shows. Or as the person of Thomas Jefferson reveals. But as Barack Obama put it, it is in this tradition that the arc of history bends towards justice. The other two traditions, not so much. So when people say they are defending “western civilization” it helps to be clear about which tradition they mean. One of those traditions needs urgent support. The other two need to be defeated, again. And in South Africa you don’t do that by pitting your ethno-nationalism against someone else’s, or your nativism against someone else’s. You do it by holding the centre: individual rights, separation of powers, democracy, a market economy, a welfare safety net, due process, a dollop of respect for humanity. Basic human decency. That’s how you stand up for civilization.

President Trump’s decision to waive sanctions against Russia as Putin continues his brutal war of aggression against Ukraine dishonors the legacy of the late Senator Lindsey Graham and is decidedly not in the national interests of the United States and should be reversed. Putin is a war criminal and only understands strength. Waiving Graham Act sanctions on Russia signals weakness at a moment that demands American strength. Now is the time to stand strong against Russian aggression, just as we did during the years of the first Trump Administration. A victory in Ukraine would be a victory for freedom and is squarely in the national interests of the United States. If Putin overruns Ukraine, I have no doubt it will only be a matter of time until Russia’s military crosses a border that our troops will have to deal with him. For the cause of freedom, for America’s national security and that of our allies including Ukraine, President Trump should Restore sanctions under the Graham Act immediately, Rescind the diesel deal with Russia and Rally our Allies to ensure Ukraine has the military support it needs to repel and defeat this Russian invasion once and for all. I do not understand how you can call yourself a progressive, leftist, or Marxist, but then make apologetic statements for the Russian invasion of Ukraine. This is straight-up imperialism. Putin seeks to annex and subjugate a former colony. His actions are no different from those of emperors and kings of previous centuries.

If Putin stops fighting, the war ends. If Zelensky stops fighting then his country will be occupied, leaders murdered, language banned, businesses stolen, children kidnapped. That's what happens in Russian-occupied Ukraine.

🇮🇹🇺🇦 WOW! WHAT A SPEECH! WHAT POWERFUL WORDS FROM ITALIAN PRIME MINISTER GIORGIA MELONI! Here is the full five-minute excerpt of her speech devoted to Ukraine and Donald Trump. “Russia has launched a new autumn campaign against Ukraine. Unable to advance on the battlefield, Moscow has increasingly turned its attacks against civilians: power plants, residential buildings, hospitals, and even buses carrying people to work, as in the horrific massacre in Kramatorsk. This is a strategy through which Russia seeks to subjugate Ukraine with terror, cold, and darkness, simply because it has failed to conquer it on the battlefield. The facts contradict Kremlin propaganda and those who spread it here. Since the beginning of the year, Russia has captured very little territory, and in September it lost much of what it had previously seized. This halt did not happen by chance. It was achieved through Ukraine’s courage and Western support, including that of Italy. This resistance is the only effective instrument for bringing Russia to the negotiating table. I respect and understand the passionate debate on this issue, including within this chamber, because nobody here wants war. We all want peace. The difference lies in how we intend to achieve it. As I see it, supporting Ukraine is not an alternative to peace. It is what makes peace possible. Because if an aggressor expects its opponent to surrender, why would it negotiate? Surrender is not peace. It is conquest. If Ukraine stopped defending itself tomorrow, as many suggest, we would not have peace. We would be discussing the occupation of a European nation and the return of Soviet imperialism. Personally, I do not miss those times. I do not miss Russian tanks crushing uprisings in Prague and Budapest. I do not miss the Berlin Wall. And nobody will ever convince me that the surrender of those defending their freedom can be called ‘peace.’ The peace we want, and the peace we are working toward, even at the cost of concessions, is a just peace, because only a just peace can endure. Only a just peace can protect Europe and our interests. That is why our government's position remains unchanged: support for Ukraine, with particular attention to civilians, pressure on Moscow, and Euro-Atlantic unity remain the pillars of our actions. In this context, we must address Donald Trump's diesel agreement with Russia. This is a decision I consider extremely risky. Of course, we all recognize the need to contain fuel prices, which place a heavy burden on families, including Italian families. But we must understand that rising prices are primarily linked to the war in Iran, not Ukraine. Legitimizing Moscow, whose bombs continue to fall on Ukrainian cities, providing new revenues to finance the war, and weakening sanctions are all factors we cannot ignore. And they contradict everything Western nations, including the United States, have done to force Putin to the negotiating table. An energy ceasefire is a different matter, one that Italy supports, and we are grateful to President Zelenskyy for Ukraine's immediate willingness to agree to it. Now we expect Russia to stop attacking Ukraine's energy infrastructure. Finally, at such a difficult moment, when so many variables are beyond our control, there is at least one thing that depends on us: We must ensure that Europe does not simply stand by and watch, because the terms of peace will affect our continent and our security.” — Giorgia Meloni, Prime Minister of Italy

Via @CityofCT MMC JP Smith: *City offers support to SAPS in Lwandle mass shooting investigation: I am saddened to hear about the shooting incident that took place this morning in Lwandle, where 10 people have died and 11 have been injured. This follows on a horrific week for South Africa, with mass shootings in KwaMakhutha, south of Durban, that claimed the lives of 12 people, and this morning in Wedela, West Rand, where 17 people died, and now in Lwandle. This shows the national crisis we are facing when it comes to violent crime and murders by syndicates that have completely lost their humanity. This crisis has been given the oxygen to flourish due to prolonged national policing failures, and now course-correcting at this point will be extremely difficult, but urgent reform is needed to combat this through better detection methods, increased use of crime intelligence and having secure methods for communities to report threats safely. These syndicates must be found, convicted and removed from society. Nationally, the criminal justice system must act to stop this. They cannot ignore this threat any longer. This morning, our senior management has reached out to Provincial SAPS management to offer assistance from our Safety and Security investigations and information management services (SSIU, SSIMS), and we will avail any other support they require in terms of technology and additional resources. I call on the community of Lwandle to notify the SAPS of any information that can assist with this case or alternatively residents can also make use of the City's anonymous tip-off line by phoning 0800 1100 77. My deepest condolences to the families of the victims. I hope we can find justice for you.
