The prime minister of Canada has been a friend of mine for a long time. We got to know each other having virtually nothing to do with politics.
He's about the most well-qualified leader in the world. He's been head of the banks of both the UK and Canada.
And we have the gall to suggest that they should become the 51st state.

🎖️The Nazis in Hogan's Heroes were played by Jewish actors who had escaped the Nazis. One of the prisoners had survived a real concentration camp.
Hogan's Heroes ran on CBS from 1965 to 1971, a comedy set in a German POW camp. Millions of viewers laughed at bumbling Colonel Klink and Sergeant Schultz.
Few knew who was behind the uniforms.
Werner Klemperer, who played Klink, was born in Germany. His father was the famous conductor Otto Klemperer, and the family left for America in 1933, the year Hitler took power. Werner accepted the role on one condition: Klink would be a fool who never succeeded.
John Banner, Schultz, was a Jewish actor who had fled Austria.
And Robert Clary, who played the French prisoner LeBeau, had been in Buchenwald. He was deported as a teenager and carried the camp tattoo on his arm for the rest of his life. Most of his family who were sent to Auschwitz never came back.
Klemperer won two Emmys for the role.
For six years, the men the Nazis tried to destroy made them the joke.

My fellow Americans: Please direct your attention to this matter for just a moment. Allow this to sink in. The President of the United States of America just said he wants to ban the free press. He said he doesn’t want them in his office, which by the way is the Oval Office in the People’s House. This is unheard of, and we the people cannot let this be!
For the record, we have a free press in this country. For the record we should all be worried not just about this latest outburst, but by all of it going forward without permission — putting our service members in harms way, raising tariffs willy nilly, threatening buildings and institutions unless his name gets put on them. This is not the behavior of a centered leader who is focused on the good of the people. This is not the behavior of a compassionate leader focused on the millions of Americans who cannot afford healthcare, childcare, gas, or food. This is not the behavior of a man who can emotionally regulate himself.
We should all be concerned — those who voted for him and those who didn’t. The midterms are around the corner. Vote like your life and the lives of others are at stake, because they are. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

Canada just did the most sensible thing any American ally has done this decade. It looked at the man Americans put on the ballot three times, worked out that he is not a phase but the country, and started swimming. On Wednesday it reached the far shore of the Atlantic and found Ursula von der Leyen waiting with a towel and an offer no country outside Europe has ever been made. It must be such a great feeling to wake up a Canadian and know that your Prime Minister is knocking it out of the park?
He is sharp as a pin and his use of diplomatic nuance is sublime. He’s charting a path that I am absolutely convinced is the right path for the Canadian people and for the world for that matter.
He has led the charge to diversify trade policy and is now building resilience to provide Canada with opportunities beyond the US. With the arctic trade routes in play and his respect for what China might have to offer, he’s building a trading framework that’s diverse by economic necessity.
The world’s now looking at the example Canada is setting as the gold standard. How cool is that? Congratulations!
