Giant corporations are exploiting our time, attention, and impulsivity for profit. They want us all sitting at home alone scrolling. We are never going to get out of that problem if people refuse to admit that it's a problem in the first place!!!

My parents moved to a new town where they didn’t know anyone in their mid-30s because of my dad’s job. My mom is still making new friends in her 60s. Basically all of them she meets through stuff like volunteering, her book club, and a group that meets up to ride bikes together

Haven’t lived near my hometown or where I went to college since graduating. I made my closest work friends through a money and time-saving group where we rotated bringing lunch from home into work for each other and organizing a union. I met people in my neighborhood volunteering
This is great if you still live around people you went to high school or college with. Many, many, many people don't do that. And in order to make the kinds of friendships where you CAN just go to each other's houses, you very often need to start with activities that cost money

beautiful question, happy to answer. im an american citizen. i love this country in spite of its dark chapters because i beleive in its promise, and its people. it’s up to us, people of good conscience, to continue the struggle to unlock its true potential.
I truly don't mean to sound like a reactionary right-winger, but if you genuinely hate the United States and think it's the worst most evil country on earth but you are a wealthy person with a job you can do from anywhere... why do you live there?

🚨In July, a new ICE agent with a history of domestic violence and mental illness killed a man in Maine who even ICE admits posed no threat to him. Now we know that internal whistleblowers at ICE were sounding the alarm about the agency utterly disregarding normal hiring rules.
SCOOP: An ICE whistleblower report obtained by the NYT said the agency was cutting corners, violating the law and fast-tracking unqualified, “improperly vetted” candidates into ICE’s ranks, part of a dangerous move that exposed the agency to “grave national security risks.”

We need more movies about dudes lost in the wilderness. I've seen DELIVERANCE, RITUALS, SOUTHERN COMFORT, THE GREY, and THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT a dozen times each. I just want to be in the woods with a bunch of miserable assholes.

New post: going into our investigation of the HF attack (before Black Hat), I was very wrong about what basically happened. This incident was far more serious than I expected, and far more serious than previous documented misalignment incidents. planned-obsolescence.org/p/t…

As someone who had 98% of their livelihood wiped out when Google decided to scrape one of my site’s content for AIOs (and thus capture my traffic), I’m particularly annoyed at (a) how long this is taking; and (b) the knowledge that any fines will go to the states, and I’ll never, ever see a penny of the lost income. But I’m particularly angry at how the slowness of this has wiped so many helpful sites off the internet, and left us all with a search engine that’s a useless spam-filled sewer.
Just got home from Judge Mehta’s courtroom for the motion to dismiss hearing in Penske Media v Google. The core issue: can Google use its adjudicated search monopoly to force publishers to provide content for AI uses at zero cost? Some notable exchanges today. 1/5

Each major studio used to have a guy whose whole job it was to squeeze the last couple million out of every theatrical release, and he was usually on a first name basis with the manager of every dollar theater in America. It was a better time.
Bring back cheap second run movie theaters. I don’t give a shit if it’s on streaming already. Charge $5 for the odyssey or spider-man in December and people would go just to kill time. Don’t ask me if it’s economically feasible became I don’t fucking know.

Tying together (with elan and aplomb) discussions of Exorcist II, Star Wars, John Carter, and many others... before putting a Dark Phoenix bow on it. An exuberant performance from McCarty-Simas.
