Sad to see Apple bending to frivolous consumer demands instead of dictating the market itself with good design. Foldable iPhone is pointless, touchscreen on a MacBook Pro is pointless. It's like they finally surrendered to years of critiques and said, fine, here you go.

All you software freaks who “skip Figma and go straight to code” need to be humbled by working with an agency to design 1 conference booth in Illustrator and realise the world hasn’t really changed all that much
For all that I like to complain about the NFL and MLS, it's nothing compared to the fiery thesis i'll one day write about Liga MX and their effect on Mexican futbol

Palantir's merch feels like the endpoint in streetwear's evolution, which started with young kids in urban areas — mostly ethnic minorities from low-income families — creating their own style from the ground up. Over time, that aesthetic was co-opted by luxury brands seeking "authenticity." And now, by a surveillance company seeking cultural capital.
Streetwear used to be an aesthetic defined by the ground-up by people were disempowered in political and economic life, but engaged in actual street culture. Now it's an aesthetic dictated from the top down by giant corporations with no conenction to such cultures. And used by political and economic elites who want to appear as outsiders.

I’ll be dead before you see me using Partiful. Partiful and RSVP apps for FRIENDSHIPS are tasteless and swagless. Text people, call them or god forbid you make plans irl.
Replying to @amandamull
i understand why people use partiful but i deeply hate it. only thing it's good at is making people feel like going to your party is going to be a huge pain in the ass and emphasizing how nonessential their attendance is. text your friends and keep an RSVP list in your notes app.

marketing being overrun by frat bros has hurt the function. to be a good marketer, you have to be of the culture. frat bros are inherently anti-culture.

When I look back at the earliest @Muse mocks, the very first thing that was designed was the “status” pill at the top of the screen. That one tiny piece of UI survived every subsequent revision, many months on.
It remains one of my favorite parts of the design. Its purpose is to simply and clearly answer the question: what is my agent doing right now? And do that across every surface of the app.
Representing status in this way is more of a messaging pattern and was kind of controversial early on. Most AI apps had coalesced around “chain of thought” as the way to represent ongoing work, which almost always appeared at the bottom of the thread itself. I had a petulant aversion to this and it didn’t work anyway, given the initial app was already three tabs (feed, chat, library). A persistent status display was necessary.
The initial version didn’t have the avatar and was only capable of ~6 deterministic states. Even in that basic form it was incredibly useful during testing – just showing connection status was critical in those early days.
Excited to share some more stories about the design of Muse. I haven’t tweeted in a few years as I’ve just been working away, but I think this will be a fun story.

(Interface) design and (front end) engineering. Maybe.
But design is much bigger than interface design, and engineering is much more than front end.
Designing a brand and patching security vulnerabilities in complex distributed systems won’t be done by the same person.
