The best political panel in H-town @ Bill King's Blog Reader’s Conference was a wide-ranging discussion on national, state, and local politics!
Host @BillKingHouston moderated, @ateas HCC, plus @MarkPJonesTX Rice U, and me commented on the Harris County Early Vote numbers, which are dramatically up, over 98% of the presidential turnout in 2020. 5 record days of EV vote hit 512k, a serious 1st week record for a mid-term. With the numbers not looking good for Republicans locally, we took live questions and answers from the audience.
Predictions on the US Senate race were consistent, given that the turnout trends in Harris County, AG Paxton will not get out of the upper 30% of the vote. I mentioned Harris County Clerk @TeneshiaforHC Hudspeth predicted a 1 Million EV turnout in Harris County on my ksevradio.com Amigos show Fri.
So will Harris County Voters force retire Treasurer Wyatt in favor of @MarcCowart for a series of DWIs and misdeeds at the end of the ballot?
The panel said probably NOT, as not enough voters know of her existing problems. What about Bo French, and in my best, Trumpster, I said he was left off the President's endorsement list in Texas... We agreed that the US House would revert to Democrat control, and the US Senate could do so on a 60/40% probability. The Texas Senate race is the key, obviously, and what Senator Fetterman from Penn does in the next Congress!
The only question we missed was, can Harris County Judge candidate @orlando_sanchez win enough Democrat and Independent votes to win with Johhny Mata's endorsement, to overcome a huge turnout lead by Leticia Plummer?
Another week of early voting remains. so GO VOTE! #txlege

Bill King’s Public Policy Spring 2026 Blog Readers Conference was a BIG success, with over 200 attendees!
I was on a concluding political issues panel with @BillKingHouston, Dr. @MarkPJonesTX of Rice @BakerInstitute, and Houston Professor @ateas talking about political party primary results, especially the upcoming race for the Republican U.S. Senate nomination between Senator @JohnCornyn and Attorney General @KenPaxton. I noted that the polling did not keep up with the final result, where the incumbent, Cornyn, outpolled challenger Paxton 42-41. The panel generally agreed that a Republican runoff traditionally favors the more conservative candidate…
Same underpolling existed in the Democratic primary, where nominee Rep. @jamestalarico won by several points over U.S. Rep. @JasmineForUS. This also ran counter to polling, as it appears some voters told pollsters one thing and then voted for what they considered the more electable candidate in the voting booth.
Clearly, the U.S. Senate race is the one to watch in November, with estimates ranging up to $100 million being spent by the @DNC and affiliated groups trying to flip a traditional Texas Senate seat from red to blue.
Also listened to Commissioner @TomSRamsey2’s panel on Harris County flood maps and his usual good P.E. comments on flooding. #txlege

Great Saturday panel discussion with Moderator @BillKingHouston and @jw_diamond of the @BakerInstitute for Public Policy about the State of the Texas Budget, future economic trends, and tax public policy in front of a really smart crowd of 300 from the thousands who read Bill’s blog! All-star lineup included Houston Mayor @whitmire_john, who made the right decision not to raise property taxes in Houston versus watching a 20% rate hike go down in flames in Austin by Austin voters! (68% No to 32% Yes).
Good infrastructure panel with Commissioner @TomSRamsey2 and former Harris County Judge Ed Emmett @EdEmmett. Political panel with Rice’s @MarkPJonesTX and @ateas! Audience was packed with public policy heavyweights like Robert Eckels (@JudgeEckels), Charles C. Foster (@charlescfoster), Orlando Sanchez (@orlando_sanchez), media members, etc… Excellent event! #txlege #kingblog

Today, we unequivocally and unapologetically reaffirm, to the United States of America and to the World, the following undeniable and indisputable facts. We ask all Americans, including all elected officials from all Parties and all levels of Government, to join us by sharing and reposting this message for the World to see:
🇺🇸 Three years ago today, Vladimir Putin illegally invaded Ukraine without justification and without provocation.
🇺🇸 The United States of America stands for the Rule of Law, and respects and defends the borders and territorial sovereignty of all Freedom-Loving Nations.
🇺🇸 Ukraine is an independent, sovereign, and freedom-loving nation, and is an ally of the United States of America and the Free World.
🇺🇸 Vladimir Putin, through his illegal invasions, genocide, kidnapping, rape, torture and murder of innocent civilians, including women and children, is an enemy of the United States of America and the Free World.
🇺🇸 The United States of America stands with Democracies and opposes Dictatorships.
🇺🇸 Volodymyr Zelenskyy is the Legitimately Elected President of Ukraine through a free and fair election.
🇺🇸 Vladimir Putin is an Unelected Dictator who imprisons his political opponents and who has never held a free and fair election.
🇺🇸 The Ukrainian election has been delayed because Ukraine is under daily relentlessly bombings, over 200 per day, by Vladimir Putin, and Ukraine is in a State of 24/7 Martial Law.
🇺🇸 Ukraine will hold their elections as soon as Vladimir Putin stops his unprovoked, unjustified daily bombings inside Ukraine.
🇺🇸 If Putin is rewarded for his illegal invasion and genocide, this will serve as a green-light incentive to other Dictators, such as CCP Chairman Xi Jinping, to pursue their own conquests (i.e. Taiwan), which will lead to more instability across the Globe.
🇺🇸 Dictators like Vladimir Putin are the Adult Versions of the School Yard Bullies that we all confronted in Grade School. And they must be dealt with in the same exact way. There is Peace through Strength, and there is War through Weakness. There is no magical third option.
#PeaceThroughStrength
