Thirty-five years ago today, on October 27, 1991, Jack Morris pitched all 10 innings of Game 7 of the World Series, shutting out the Atlanta Braves 1-0 at the Metrodome before 55,118 fans. The St. Paul native allowed seven hits, struck out eight and walked two on 126 pitches, and he was still out there in the 10th only because he talked his manager out of removing him. Both clubs had finished last in 1990, Minnesota at 74-88 and Atlanta at 65-97, and Kirby Puckett's 11th-inning homer off Charlie Leibrandt the night before had forced this game. Morris, signed as a free agent after 14 seasons in Detroit, had already won Game 1, and now he matched zeroes with 24-year-old John Smoltz, who allowed six hits over 7⅓ scoreless innings before Mike Stanton and Alejandro Peña relieved him. Atlanta's chance came in the eighth: Lonnie Smith singled and Terry Pendleton doubled off the left-center wall, but Smith, deked by Chuck Knoblauch and Greg Gagne faking a play at second, stopped at third. Ron Gant grounded out, David Justice was walked intentionally, and Sid Bream grounded into a 3-2-3 double play, Hrbek to catcher Brian Harper and back to Hrbek. Minnesota's mirror-image chance died the same way in the bottom of the eighth, Hrbek lining into a bases-loaded double play turned by Mark Lemke, and the Twins left the winning run at third in the ninth. After nine innings and 118 pitches, manager Tom Kelly told Morris he was done. “TK, I'm fine. I'm REALLY fine,” Morris said — and he stayed in. Morris retired Atlanta in order in the 10th on eight pitches. Then Dan Gladden broke his bat on a double to left, Knoblauch bunted him to third, Puckett and Hrbek were walked intentionally, and Gene Larkin, pinch-hitting for Jarvis Brown, drove Peña's first pitch to deep left-center for the game's only run. Series MVP Morris — 2-0, a 1.17 ERA in 23 innings — won 254 career games, took a second straight title with Toronto in 1992, and entered the Hall of Fame via the Modern Era Committee in December 2017. ⚾ A 10-inning shutout on 126 pitches in a 1-0 Game 7 — is Morris's gem the greatest pitching performance in World Series history? 👇️

On This Date in 1987: With the bases loaded and two out in the bottom of the sixth in Game 6 of the #WorldSeries, the Cardinals brought in the lefty Ken Dayley to face Kent Hrbek, who hit his first pitch over the center-field fence for the biggest grand slam in Twins history.

Barack Obama at his last press briefing with reporters, 2017: "I have enjoyed working with all of you. That does not, of course, mean that I've enjoyed every story that you have filed, but that's the point of this relationship. You're not supposed to be sycophants. You're supposed to be skeptics. You're supposed to ask me tough questions. You're not supposed to be complimentary, but you're supposed to cast a critical eye on folks who hold enormous power."

Join us in wishing a Happy 102nd Birthday to the first Black pitcher in Cardinals history, Bill Greason! Greason grew up in Atlanta and lived across the street from Martin Luther King Jr. before serving as one of the first Black Marines and fighting in the Battle of Iwo Jima. Following his military service, Greason played alongside Willie Mays with the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro Leagues before joining the Cardinals organization in 1954, where he helped mentor a young Bob Gibson. After his playing days, Greason spent more than 50 years serving as pastor of Bethel Baptist Church in Birmingham. Today, as the last surviving player from the Negro Leagues era, his remarkable legacy continues to inspire generations.

Puerto Rico has no water, Gary Indiana has no power, Hawaii is flooded and had a hurricane snowstorm over a volcano, lettuce and popsicles are battling to kill you. The USS Lincoln and the rest of the Navy are nearing mutiny, the totalitarian state of North Korea is now your friend, dog food is being recalled and your president has to hide in a catering truck. The Trump regime is an epic disaster.

Naz Reid on the fans of Minnesota and what he was able to create in his time there: "They’ve seen me go undrafted, they’ve seen me work my way to some playing time minutes — whether it’s 15 minutes a game, 10 minutes a game — and they’ve seen me working my way to it going to 20 minutes and so forth and so on. So, Sixth Man of the Year, I couldn’t have that without those fans and the situation I was in. I’m definitely excited to share that moment with them. And then obviously having the moment of me being traded and then them expressing their feelings about how much they wish I was able to stay and so forth and so on. So, it’s just kudos to that fan base. And like I said, the way they appreciated me, the way that they’ve embraced me since Day 1. I worked with them for eight years, and each year wasn’t easy. Each year was tough. It got better, obviously. They’ve been in situations where stands weren’t filled to where they are now. And I’ve been in that same element with them."
