Culture is “a gospel”, that “quietly converts, elicits commitments, transforms, and suggests human fulfillments.” And in so doing it reveals what we value and believe. Culture is made by humanity, but in many ways it is making us into it's own image. #TheCultureTranslator

Twelfth Night: the last day of Christmastide. Tomorrow is the Epiphany of our Lord Jesus Christ, a feast day in the church bigger than Christmas in the earliest centuries, and still celebrated with great festivity in Latin countries. Our Epiphany star goes up tomorrow.
At Advent we prayed for the Prince of Peace to enter our world and redeem us from our violence. Now, we pray for peace on earth and goodwill toward men.

It is a terrible misunderstanding of the Gospel to think that it offers us salvation while relieving us of responsibility for the life of the world, for the sin and sorrow and pain with which our human life and that of our fellow men and women are so deeply interwoven.

What is the prophetic task of the church today?
Walter Brueggemann suggest that it is “to tell the truth in a society that lives in illusion, grieve in a society that practices denial, and express hope in a society that lives in despair.”
That’s just like Jesus.

It’s possible to have a life that doesn’t appear fruitful to the world, but is faithful to God. This is the foolishness of the cross.
The cross looks like failure, but is the greatest act of faithfulness which has led to incalculable fruitfulness.

Wonderful prayer at church this morning:
Lord God, in gratitude for this moment, this meal, these people, we give ourselves to you. Take us out to live as changed people because we have shared the living bread and cannot remain the same....

modesty: humility in public. -A Parent's Guide to Modesty, axis.org I love this definition because it encompasses every person, not just placing a focus of potential shame on females. Thank you, @axisideas #honorshame

The hinge of the story on which all its meaning turns is the incarnation, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
To a world determined to bring about change through dominion, God gives us the cross, which stands in opposition to our will to power, eternally reminding us God saved the world through powerlessness. #TheCultureTranslator #AxisIdeas
