Davey Johnson asked me to learn to catch.
My first reaction: Why?
He looked at me and said, "I think it'll add value to you. And I think it'll let you see the game from a lens you've never seen before."
I trusted Davey. So I said yes.
Here's what I didn't understand until I got behind the plate:
Before becoming a catcher I was always looking in. I was watching from a distance.
Behind the plate, the whole game opens up.
Everyone is out in front of you. You can read every hitter's swing. You're building a relationship with every pitcher. You see the defensive alignment. You understand strategy from a completely different angle.
It changed everything about how I understood baseball.
And it changed what I thought I could do next.
I finally stopped trying to squeeze more out of a playing career that had run its course. I started thinking about coaching. About managing.
A few years later I was a minor league manager.
I don't think I get anywhere close to that without Davey Johnson asking me to learn a position I had no business playing and without me trusting him enough to say yes.
Two questions worth sitting with today:
Is there someone in your life who's earned your trust enough that you'd say yes to almost anything they suggested?
And is there a lens on your work you've never looked through?

Mark Wahlberg is set to play Pete Rose in a new movie about Charlie Hustle’s incredible life and career.
This could be one hell of a movie.
Pete Rose wasn’t just a baseball player. He was Cincinnati. He played harder than damn near anybody who ever stepped on a field, became MLB’s all-time hits leader, then carried all the controversy that came with it.
Wahlberg as Pete Rose?
Yeah, I’m watching this one!!!

Everybody loves “earned playing time” until their kid isn’t earning it. Then it’s politics, favoritism or bad coaching. Sometimes they just got beat out.

Interesting. Thank you for sharing.
This woke me up this am, a text from my uncle. “Everyone is complaining that baseball is broken because the Dodgers got Tarik Skubal.”
Bruce Harper says it best here.
I don’t remember people complaining about a needed salary cap in MLB when the Yankees were winning 4 World Series in five years between 1996-2000.
But the Dodgers start winning World Series, which they had not won for 32 years, a span from 1988-2020, and now everyone wants a salary cap and is complaining. Thats called an East Coast Bias. 💯
It’s not the Dodgers fault, as Bryce says, that they have perfected everything. Their farm system is the best, their tv contract is the best, their players are the best and fit the mold they are looking for. They have one of the best stadiums and their tradition is right up there with the Yankees and Red Sox.
The Tigers made a terrible trade. Zyhir Hope is just another Raul Mondesi/Yasiel Puig player. He wasn’t even in their top 3 rookie outfielders like De Paula, Tibbs and Sirota. And, River Ryan and Brady Smith have already both had Tommy John surgeries in their young careers.
The Dodgers were thought to have at least given up Emmet Sheehan, a ready MLB pitcher AND the prospects. Nope!
Every other team like the Yankees, Braves, Cubs, Brewers, Phillies and Red Sox could have made an offer, a better offer, but they chose not to.
MLB doesn’t need a salary cap what they need is for Major League Baseball to take control of all the teams TV rights and then distribute the money from those deals evenly across baseball, not just a percentage, but evenly. It’s those TV contracts where you see the biggest disparity and that would take care of that disparity immediately.
Don’t blame the Dodgers because they have perfected everything. Blame other teams for running a poor organization.
I waited 32 years for this. I’ll enjoy it.

As much as we would love to protect our players… The Game requires us to embrace failure in many ways.
If that’s too much for you - go play Spades!
Can’t avoid it. It’s happening, it’s right around the corner, at every turn. And it can be a good thing FOR us!
Humbabe! #👊
"Failure is a learning opportunity. Failure is growth."
Growth doesn't happen when everything goes right. It happens when players are given the opportunity to fall short, learn from the experience, and have coaches who help them get back up and move forward.
The goal isn't to eliminate failure. The goal is to use it as part of the development process.

🗣️Serious ⚾️players:
Hopefully at some point you will realize that video games and other screen time priorities don’t help you achieve your goals! And when you do choose to spend more time on📱🎮 over ⚾️, don’t blame your coach when you don’t play, don’t succeed & don’t get a chance at the next level!

Catchers… you’re number one job is THE PITCHER. I watch all summer, youth catchers never ask the pitcher what he needs the catcher to do to help him be successful. Does movement bother you? Can I help shape pitches? What C set up do you want? What signs are you comfortable with?
