This is another great technological achievement, but also another harmful sugar-drink entering the market. There is a big difference between a tool designed to develop relationships and a tool designed to complement or supplant them. This video shows which path this company is pursuing. Cocaine, meth, sugar, cars, and plastics can all solve certain problems really well. As can a synthetic “friend.” The problem is not that they can’t be used for good, but rather our propensity to abuse conveniences in ways that are harmful. Any tool that alters our social behavior ultimately affects whole communities and society. Tools like this will continue our trend of “high relational mobility,” making us less resilient and capable for the messiness of social human life. None of this undermines the incredible achievement this team has pulled off. But it feels dangerous to go down this path without a debate.
Last year we launched Tolan, inspired by a vision of AI that sees you and believes in you, not one that books restaurant reservations for you. Your Tolan shows up for you at 3am when you’re alone with your newborn. On your commute when you’re anxious about the day ahead. When you just finished a new show and none of your friends have watched it yet. The people who love Tolan are parents. Caregivers. Moms in Dallas and Dads in Atlanta. People who aren’t trying to optimize and be more productive, but who simply want to feel seen and supported in their aspirations. This month more than 250k people will spend time with their Tolan. Those users have exchanged billions of messages across more than 70m conversations over the last year. Today, we're announcing $30m in additional capital from @mignano and @usv, with @khoslaventures and @rabois doubling down, bringing our total capital raised to $60m. To celebrate, we made a short film celebrating some of the ways that Tolans show up :)

Another reminder that LLMs are the microwaves of our generation, and lazy prompts are ultra-processed TV dinners. If you’re currently achieving more but learning less, you are ultimately harming yourself. Learning, problem solving, friction and overcoming adversity are all part of a healthy cognitive diet 🧠💪

This is what I think of whenever I look at Liquid Glass. All these businesses have their own logo in their own style, but they're forced to conform to someone else's vision. IMO platforms should provide tools for self-expression, not apply their own opinionated style by default.

Whenever I think about the next generation learning to use AI-enabled computers, it reminds me of my parents saying how our generation can’t change a tire because we never learned, and don’t understand how engines work because they’ve became complex, enclosed boxes.

Only in corporate life are people unrealistically excited about managing to finish a conversation early and “giving everyone a minute back.” 😂

This is not a diss at this post (I agree with the points) but more disappointment with our current culture. “the future of design will not be won by whoever has the biggest resource folder or produces the most screens.” IMO designers should not be focused on winning and beating each other. Most of us got into this discipline to help people by collaborating with our peers, and success should be measure by how well we solve problems for others, whether they are broadcast and awarded or not. Online culture (which becomes offline culture) has turned everyone against each other. No one seems to feel safe. Everyone acts like they’re in a competition and that losing means being irrelevant and without a job.
design is getting easier to produce. good layouts, clean interfaces, decent typography, polished motion. the baseline keeps rising, and tools keep making execution faster. almost everything is already available on the internet now. design resources. assets. templates. typefaces. references. components. systems. inspiration. access is no longer the advantage. what matters is what you do with all of it. how you combine things. how you interpret them. what you ignore. what you change. what you make your own. and most importantly, whether any of it creates actual impact. that is where the real differentiators start: craft, taste, and point of view. craft is caring enough to notice what most people skip. taste is knowing what to remove, what to exaggerate, what deserves attention, and when something is already enough. point of view is harder. it is the reason your work feels like yours. the choices you keep making. the things you refuse to do. the references you pull from. the problems you believe are worth solving. the way you interpret the same brief differently from everyone else. ai can generate options. templates can give you structure. systems can make production faster. the internet can give everyone access to the same ingredients. but access does not create great work. judgment does. when everyone can find the same resources and use the same tools, technical ability becomes less scarce. what becomes scarce is knowing how to use them with intention. the future of design will not be won by whoever has the biggest resource folder or produces the most screens. it will belong to people who can take what is available to everyone and turn it into something only they would have made. something useful. something memorable. something that actually moves the business, product, or culture forward. the ingredients are everywhere now. the difference is you.

That doesn’t mean there won’t be a really popular set of tasks that are all done with a prompt box, especially for non-professional needs.

This all happens quickly on device with narrow regex and ML rather than broad and slow LLMs. Your data is just as secure in North as it is in the Gmail app.

An especially good newsletter from @DenseDiscovery this week. In particular the interactive storytelling for Ordinary Abundance and Ukraine's Kill Zone, which exist in painfully stark contrast. Highly recommend subscribing... and reading in @north_mail of course 😏 densediscovery.com/issues/40… Real screenshot from the app 👇

Well, there's a first for everything: I actually pinned (starred) two shopping emails so I can check them out tomorrow. It's not spam when its your favorite brands displayed visually in @north_mail 😏 Real screenshots from the app 👇

I’ve spent the last few days improving the quality of our image extraction, which we’ll be pushing to TestFlight this week. These engineering puzzles are one of my favorite parts of building @north_mail Now please enjoy my effort to pull-out and roll without a gimbal 🙃👇

Couldn’t agree more. Also acknowledging and validating someone’s achievement before giving feedback (even if asked). Not a shit sandwich. Genuine recognition that doing things is hard and they did a thing and they should be proud!
You have a superpower you're probably not using enough. But you should be. So let's talk about encouragement! At any time, you can just shoot a friend, or even stranger, a quick note letting them know something they made or said or did was wonderful. It might take you 30 seconds to share your appreciation and let them know what it means or how it inspired you, but to the person receiving it, it'll very likely make their day if not week. That ability, to speak a few words into existence that turns into joy for the recipient and might be remembered forever, is a superpower. For one reason or another, it feels like as we age we tend to ration our praise. I think that's stupid. It should be the opposite. One of the most powerful gifts you can give to someone is to let them know you're proud of them, or that they're doing a great job, or that you're simply glad they're in your life. So whenever you think of someone, or see something they did that you enjoyed or appreciated, tell them! Be lavish in your encouragement, and make your corner of the world that much brighter today.

Do you think our lack of tolerance for disagreement and criticism will track with our time spent talking to subservient AI? The collapse of our communities and neighborhoods has already removed environments that required us to compromise and negotiate. Don’t like your neighbor? Move apartments. Don’t like your manager? Change teams. Don’t like local politics? Move city.

I love this signifier for no parking in Germany. Cost engineers in many cities would deny all the extra paint.

Whenever there’s a new tool or paradigm in our industry, I notice designers fixated on how to capitalize on that tool as if that’s the job. IMO, you should always be asking: what are my goals as a person and designer, who do I want to help and what do I need to do to help them, where do I want to grow, what process do I want to hone and what will I learn by mastering that process, how do I want to construct thoughts and how will I use them to break down problems? Tools are not the destination in themselves. They are in service of these questions. They help us achieve things that exist before and after any new capability arrives.

North (@north_mail) aggregates individual delivery updates into a single order so that everything is easy to access. Now and then, updates have missing or conflicting information. We just released 'Merge into...' allowing you to manually link two separate orders together 🎉 Like 'Move to...', we want these moments to feel enjoyable and empowering. (Shoutout to Mother Root🍹 and @raazitea ☕️)

Figma ↔️ XCode Few things have been more rewarding about learning SwiftUI than owning the output. I've always tried to design based on how a thing will be built, but it feels completely different to follow that through, letting one tool inform the other. Currently implementing onboarding for @north_mail northmail.app
