A dead-on analysis, and these policy failures all trace to the lack of moral character necessary for statesmanship. Future generations will marvel that so many people sympathetic to traditional morality could delude themselves that a man so devoid of virtue could be a good leader
Republicans are going to have a terrible night, and the simple reason why is that Trump has put up perhaps the worst *performance* this term of any president in a century or more. Remember that he entered with an actual mandate: the House and Senate, a popular vote victory and a swing-state sweep, and 6-3 Supreme Court. Democrats were afraid enough to vote for mild but real immigration restrictionist legislation in the Laken Riley Act. Everyone wondered how far the "Vibe Shift" would go. Trump managed to turn that into essentially zero durable wins whatsoever. He personally *hates* the very idea of legislation, the notion that he would have to spend time going back and forth with Congress, learning details and making compromises. So he simply didn't do it! He didn't make a compelling case for abolishing the filibuster. He didn't try communicating clearly to the public in support of popular bills to get to 60 votes. He just decided not to do it at all. So they passed an unpopular tax cut, some funding for ICE, and a sop to the crypto industry, and that was basically it. Least productive Congress in decades, due to the tastes of one man. Trump adopted one of the worst macro policies we've ever had: high deficits, high tariffs, and attacks on central bank independence. We managed to pay higher interest rates while still having high trade deficits AND weakening the dollar. Just a total failure. On immigration, perhaps THE signature issue, Trump essentially min-maxxed effectiveness and backlash. Instead of trying to leverage the political moment for new laws and a self-deportation agenda (that is, walling off the economy to remove the benefit of irregular presence in the US), he opted for a maximally aggressive approach. The administration spent attention, funds, legal manpower on stunts like deporting random people to Salvadoran prisons with essentially no due process. ICE and Border Patrol were encouraged to be aggressive and confrontational, which helped contribute to the shooting deaths of American protestors. It turns out, that's extremely unpopular! What about the approach of going after employers? The obvious vector? Trump hated that idea! He repeatedly has said he doesn't want to target businesses (especially farms) that use large amounts of illegal labor. This is just an incomprehensible position. Instead of charging a few dozen businessmen and removing the incentive for millions of illegal workers to be here, you arrest people off the street one by one at the cost of thousands of dollars in manpower per each, while their crying wives and kids post TikToks about it. Upshot on immigration: electoral strength turned into a crippling electoral weakness in exchange for deporting maybe 6% of the illegally present population. The tariffs were a total shitshow. Embarrassing rollout, no underlying theory of action at all. No targeted focus on key industries. Our country tariffed products we can't grow. We tariffed *inputs* of our own valuable exports. The schemes and amounts changed constantly, sending the stock market reeling and presenting scenes of chaos to the world. Trump's messaging throughout has been generationally bad. While facing nearly 2:1 unpopularity, he spends his days posting AI slop, saying he'll rename New Mexico or invade allies, among other bizarre remarks. He brags about a ballroom and a pool repainting while gas hits records. At no point has he ever attempted any kind of message discipline. Then there are the deeply unpopular attacks on rule of law, his "game-recognize-game" pardons for all manner of scammers and criminals, the crypto schemes that he and his family engage in, the evilly conceived and embarrassingly executed legal attacks on Comey, Jerome Powell, and others. With his monthslong stand on NOT releasing the Epstein files, he became maybe the first president ever to stake out a 99-1 issue on the 1% side. That's not even getting into Iran, DOGE, his candidate recruitment choices, or countless other things. Simply put: Trump has managed to royally screw up virtually every single facet of his presidency. It's been undeniable, voters have noticed, and there's really no escape from it. This is what the GOP base chose in early 2024, and this is the world they're living with now. Where they handed the reins of history to a fat, vain, washed-up old man and let him drive.

Every once in a while the fundamental difference between Catholics and Evangelicals comes into stark relief:
I support the Pentagon’s decision to livestream the execution of mass-murderer Nidal Hassan.   Capital punishment is commanded by God in Genesis 9:6 to remind people of the sanctity of human life. The more people that can see that truth illustrated through a public execution, the better. @DeptofWar @PeteHegseth

President Trump’s decision to lift sanctions on Russian fuel amidst Putin’s ongoing and brutal attacks on civilian targets in Ukraine makes no sense and is a betrayal of the legacy and leadership of the late Senator Lindsey Graham. While Ukraine fights for its survival, Putin’s war machine continues to prosecute his terrorist war on civilian populations and innocent Ukrainians are dying every day. Now, Instead of implementing the tough sanctions Lindsey Graham fought to his last breath to enact, President Trump has announced the United States is lifting sanctions on Russian energy, fueling the Putin’s war machine. As I saw firsthand in Ukraine last month, Putin is losing this war. Ukraine has fought the Russian military to a standstill and reinvented warfare with drones taking the fight into the heart of Russia. America should not be throwing a lifeline to Putin’s war machine. Now is the time to stand strong against Russian aggression as we did during the first Trump administration. Putin doesn’t want peace. Putin wants Ukraine. I have no doubt that if Putin overruns Ukraine, it will only be a matter of time until Russia’s military crosses a border that our troops will have to deal with him. America is the Leader of the Free World. For our National Security, for the security of our Allies in Europe including Ukraine, President Trump should rescind this deal immediately and return to the strong policies of our four years in the White House; impose harsh sanctions on any nation purchasing Russian energy and work with our allies to ensure Ukraine has the military support it needs to repel and defeat this Russian invasion once and for all. Slava Ukraini🇺🇸🇺🇦

The first time I went to an Everton match was during the FA Cup in 1989. Unfortunately, it went the wrong way. Tonight, they didn’t disappoint. Thanks for the invite, @andyburnham.

Classic projection. I'm not the one who is obsessing over a person. On the contrary, I'm criticizing people who have themselves become obsessed with a person, and who excuse his repeated betrayals, to which I've called attention frequently only because the betrayals are themselves so frequent. That's the nature of personality cults: they transform every policy issue into one about the Dear Leader, and then when one objects to the policy they say "Why are you obsessed with our Dear Leader!!" It's mass psychosis, to which you have fallen prey.

Look, in all charity: intellectually and theologically, this man is a clown and a testament to the sad fact that a great amount of American evangelicalism has plainly devolved into various forms of heresy or sub-Christianity. And we Catholics need to start speaking up about that.

It’s because he’s doing your job, Rick. America has lost its standing in the world. And all you have to show for it is worn out knee pads. Stay in that position. Real leaders will take it from here.
I don’t understand why @CAGovernor Newsom can make time to go to Munich, but not show up for victims of the Palisades wildfire who are still waiting for answers.

The sedative cocktail of our demise: Bad or absent leadership, devoid of character, evil people in power, bad agents doing a plainly terrible job, professional online liars saying what you already know they’ll say, enraged online addicts seeing what you already know they’ll see.

Miranda Devine is offended that Mark Kelly reminds people of his remarkable service record that nobody disputes he earned. Weirdly, she doesn’t appear to have a problem with Trump, reminding us, on a daily basis, of his accomplishments, most of which are entirely fictitious.

As George Will once said: The GOP is the only party whose leaders hate and fear its own members
Has there ever been another period in American history when the president's party members do his bidding because they're afraid of getting murdered by his supporters?

Some on the left laugh. Some are disgusted. Some on the right pray for mercy. Some feel called to crusade. I have zero interest in fighting down my political enemies through force, as if this could do anything but exacerbate the problem and devour my soul.

Not exactly “Mr. Gorbachev tear down this wall” is it

We can't pretend any of this is normal or "just politics in 2025." Not firing the BLS commissioner for not juking the stats, not possibly pardoning Ghislaine Maxwell, not the tariff insanity, not filling the cabinet with scammers and cranks, none of it. It's not normal.
Hey guys, I know we're all battle-scarred veterans with thousand-yard stares who are inured to it all by now, but let's not just quickly move past how banana republic clownshoes it is for Trump to fire the BLS commissioner for reporting politically unfortunate labor statistics.

Truth just doesn't matter anymore. Only the relentless pursuit of victory, even if imaginary.
Leavitt: "The president has now ended conflicts between Thailand and Cambodia, Israel and Iran, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, India and Pakistan, Serbia and Kosovo, and Egypt and Ethiopia. This means President Trump has brokered on average about one peace deal or ceasefire per month during his 6 months in office. It's well past done that President Trump was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize."
