Please stop saying we should wear masks "when appropriate."
COVID surges throughout the year, and other viruses, pollution, wildfire smoke etc. are also significant health issues.
It is ALWAYS appropriate to wear a mask.

Banning masks has nothing to do with preventing crime. Japan has one of the lowest crime rates in the world, and everyone there wears a mask regularly.

Please stop believing we don’t owe each other anything. We owe each other so much! We owe each other love, equity, understanding, community, compassion, and much more. Don’t let this toxic hyper individualism cut you off from humanity. We’re all connected. We all need each other.

one of the greatest lessons i’ve learned in organizing is to not blame people for being surprised when they find out how bad the world is, even when it hits them late in life. not people who feign ignorance, but people who are truly surprised

When I was in college, we protested investment in South African apartheid. It seemed unrealistic, but eventually it worked and now Mandela is on stamps. Solidarity with students and faculty and anyone speaking up against investing in apartheid and genocide!

This year I taught an entirely virtual open-access graduate course. Materials were free, speakers were compensated, and students were in attendance from all over the WORLD. On-line learning and community is not only possible but often PREFERABLE. No need to "return to normal."

Today was a beautiful reminder of how humans can come together for science. Imagine if we did the same to fight viruses and climate change.

Today @WCKitchen lost several of our sisters and brothers in an IDF air strike in Gaza. I am heartbroken and grieving for their families and friends and our whole WCK family. These are people…angels…I served alongside in Ukraine, Gaza, Turkey, Morocco, Bahamas, Indonesia. They are not faceless…they are not nameless. The Israeli government needs to stop this indiscriminate killing. It needs to stop restricting humanitarian aid, stop killing civilians and aid workers, and stop using food as a weapon. No more innocent lives lost. Peace starts with our shared humanity. It needs to start now.
This breaks my heart. 💔 World Central Kitchen have been absolute heroes. If you're looking for an organization to support that is directly, personally, saving 🍉 lives in Gaza, @WCKitchen is it. 🙏

Picking tea is hard work but like…a few hours like this and I think my soul would be healed.
I've been with my partner, who is disabled, for over 22 years. And I, too, really don't know what to say to folks who value indoor dining more than their immunocompromised partner's life. 😞

Four years ago, when @DrTedros declared COVID-19 a public health emergency, he said:
"We cannot say this loudly enough, or clearly enough, or often enough: all countries can still change the course of this pandemic."
These words still apply today.

For anyone who read that horrible NPR article (😑) today, and themselves hold some of the same views about the "inconvenience" of 😷 and such... this 🧵is a most gracious unpacking of it all. Far more gracious than I have words for tonight...
