I want to explain a bit about OLED panels here, and before getting into it you don’t have to agree with the decisions Apple makes, but it’s at least worth understanding them a bit more It’s likely an LTPS OLED and not LTPO. You can also have a panel capable of 120hz, as in the OLED won’t burn out, but that doesn’t mean the display controller or backplane support it. You’d likely use LTPS for cost savings. LTPS doesn’t support variable refresh rate, which means you’re locked into essentially 60hz, 120hz, and that’s basically it. The reason you don’t do this is calibration time for color, LTPS display panels don’t hold color calibration and brightness data across different refresh rates well, which means you take a massive hit on battery and longevity of the panel. LTPS transistors leak, so the pixel can't hold its charge, and if you drop the refresh rate too low you get flicker and brightness droop. That usually caps the bottom around 60Hz. Every refresh mode also needs its own gamma/brightness calibration, or you get flicker and color shifts when it switches. More modes means more calibration and QC. Most android OEMs either lock at 120hz/60hz variable and swap between those two modes but battery takes a hit. Some android OEMs don’t care, you probably won’t notice, it it does happen. Apple waited until LTPO for OLED ProMotion because, likely, color calibration and dynamic refresh rate for battery. iPad Pro has it for a reason, as does the iPhone and Apple Watch (that’s more AOD but still) Again you don’t need to agree with it, but there’s usually a reason for why these decisions are made.
