I asked 28 Japanese kids one question.
“Why do Americans fly their flag everywhere?”
“Because they love America.”
“Because it looks cool.”
“Because they won lots of wars.”
One boy said,
“Maybe they just really like stars.”
Everyone laughed.
Then I showed them pictures.
American flags on houses.
On farms.
Outside small businesses.
At baseball games.
One girl raised her hand.
“Are they required to do that?”
“No. They choose to.”
She looked surprised.
“Even at their own houses?”
“Even at their own houses.”
Then a quiet boy said,
“In Japan, we don’t usually put flags outside our homes.”
He looked at the pictures again.
“Maybe Americans just want everyone to know where their heart belongs.”
The teacher didn’t say anything.
Neither did I.
I thought that was a beautiful answer.

My coworker spent one year in Tennessee.
He came back to Tokyo two months ago.
He is not the same man.
He says "y'all" in meetings. To our boss.
He holds the door for the entire floor. Twelve people. Every morning.
He asked the convenience store clerk how her day was going. She had to sit down.
He calls every man "bud." Including the CEO.
He refuses to describe anything under three hours away as "far."
He waves at drivers who let him cross. One driver waved back and almost hit a pole.
Last week, he told a junior employee, "I'm proud of you."
She went to the restroom and cried for ten minutes.
We thought it would wear off.
It didn't. It's spreading.
Three people in accounting now say "y'all."
The junior employee holds the door.
The convenience store clerk asks HIM how his day is going.
Tennessee, I don't know what you did to him.
Please do it to the rest of us.
People on the spectrum often have a strong sense of justice, so false attacks hit differently. You can counter Trump without them. Don’t use distorted lines like the “fine people” quote to call him racist. That’s not debate. It’s like blasting a high-power whistle right in someone’s ear. I’m asking for the same kind of courtesy: if the claim is false, drop it.
