Daniel Pink has a line I come back to often:
“Control leads to compliance; autonomy leads to engagement.”
I think there is an important leadership lesson underneath it.
Too often, organizations get very specific about what people are supposed to do:
Use this process.
Follow these steps.
Complete this form.
Do it this way.
Then we measure whether people complied.
But compliance with a process is not the same thing as achieving the outcome.
A better approach is often to be very clear about the destination:
What are we trying to accomplish?
What does success look like?
What evidence will tell us whether we are getting there?
Then build the conditions for success.
Provide the training.
Give people useful tools.
Coach them.
Remove barriers.
Create opportunities to collaborate.
Check progress.
And within reasonable guardrails, give people room to figure out how they are going to get there.
I have worked with teams that wanted to try approaches I would not have chosen.
Sometimes I thought the idea was a little crazy.
My response has usually been: Try it.
But tell me what you expect to happen, how you will measure it, and when we will look at the evidence.
Then either their idea works and I learn something, or it doesn’t and they learn something.
Either way, we are learning.
Autonomy without clarity can create drift.
Control without autonomy can create compliance.
The goal is people who understand what matters, have the capability to act, and have enough ownership to make good decisions along the way.

You can’t shelter your child from every hard moment and then expect them to handle adversity when it counts.

I know the pain of losing loved ones to assassination. Charlie Kirk stood for life, faith, and truth—unashamed of Jesus. Now is not the time to attack him, but to honor his legacy, pray for his family, and ask: Where will you spend eternity?

Hallmark is handing out new pricing sheets to customers in their stores and telling everyone it’s because of Trump’s tariffs
🚨 After being told this she looked it up online, it says Hallmark manufactures in Kansas. She called corporate, they confirmed it’s all in Kansas. After pressing the Hallmark employee on the phone about this, the employee admits it’s about the “economic climate” (SO A LIE TO MAKE TRUMP LOOK BAD)
“As she's handing it to me, she said it's because of the tariffs. And I said, okay. So I get into the car and I'm thinking to myself, I was like, a tariff is like a tax on imported goods from outside of the country.
So I Google where Hallmark manufacturers their sh*t from and it said Kansas, which is in the United States and I was like, okay, so then I call Hallmark. I said, hey, where do you guys make your ornaments and your cards and all your stuff? And she goes, the majority of our things to my knowledge are made in Kansas. Everything is here made in the United States.”
“Everything is made right here in the United States. I said okay so why are you guys raising the prices and not just on some items right like if you had like one or two items that are made and manufactured in other countries and have it shipped here. Okay cool tariffs are probably gonna affect that and you raise the prices, okay whatever, this this is a generic list for everything (Hallmark is handing out to everyone at their stores)... So you see what I'm saying? It doesn't... It's not making sense to me at all.
So she said, listen, They told me, this is what she said, they told me to tell you guys it was... It is because of the climate... Let me get the list. Hold on, let get the word. She calls it an economic climate”
