I am mid-flight right now and I have just received the news that Sir Patrick Stewart has left us. Modern technology is both an impressive and an extremely cold thing. Internet databases have already begun referring to him in the past tense. “Sir Patrick Stewart was…” and such a surreal sight hangs heavy on my heart.
Patrick was a friend. Not a close one, mind you, but it was a friendship, an “acquaintanceship” perhaps, that spanned more than half my life.
Ann Cook Calhoun was an extremely well published and well known Shakespeare scholar who also happened to be a dear friend of my family. A better way of describing our relationship is that she became something of a fairy godmother to me, taking an early interest in my education, both financially and academically.
Ann and Patrick had been dear friends for many years (since their mutual involvements with the Royal Shakespeare Company) and she often told me that I reminded her of a young Patrick. Of course, I always thought the comment was her way of being encouraging. Once, when I was attending the graduate Acting program at Columbia University, Ann came to New York with my parents and took us all to see Patrick play Prospero in a Broadway production of “The Tempest”. That was the beginning of my association with Patrick and, in that one evening, I saw what an artist and a professional truly looked like.
Flash many years forward, and you can imagine our mutual surprise at finding ourselves in the very small club of Enterprise Captains. Just… I’m not sure there’s another word for it but “bonkers”. Every time we saw one another, Patrick and I couldn’t help but marvel at this strange serendipity and how Ann, God rest her soul, would have been over the moon at this kismet. While I always thought that Ann had just been doing me a favor, I eventually realized that she really had seen something in me that would, for whatever reason, prove a connection to her dearest old friend. God, I loved her.
Like I say, I didn’t know Patrick incredibly well, but I always knew him to be generous and gracious to a fault. Our first time appearing together as captains was at the network up-fronts in New York. I had arrived late because of my production schedule so I didn’t get to rehearse our bit on stage before we walked out to the lights and cue cards. Of course, I completely missed my mark and had to adjust which made the entire audience laugh. Patrick held his opening line, looked at me and made a gesture as if to say, “You good?” I nodded vigorously, which seemed to elicit another laugh and he nodded back as if to say, “Alright then.”
Patrick had presence, generosity and good grace to spare, and along with an incredible intellect, he brought those qualities not only to Jean Luc, but into a lived integrity that made him an exemplar for lost, young actors looking for a way. I’ll always love him for it. I’m just sorry that was our one and only moment on stage together. Even our turn together in “Dr Strange” was pieced together in post. Why? Because he was shooting Star Trek: Picard” and they couldn’t get him off the set. Jean Luc was if not his first love, his deepest.
Oh well. Perhaps in the next play, in the next theater, he’ll hold a small, nameless roll for me and I will carry that spear with delight.
Bravo, Patrick. I will miss you dearly. Until next time… Engage.

This seems like a great time to reshare my favourite Sir Patrick Stewart performance, ‘What has the ECHR ever done for us?’ It’s just perfect in every possible way … including the ending 😂😂😂 RIP.

@donmcgowan this is the danger that was threatening us peacefully opposing Farage on public land the day before the locals.

This is sickening. I thought Reform’s hangers-on were all about “Protecting women and girls”?
My thoughts are with Ryan Dinnage’s victim.

I got a photo op with Patrick Stewart at ECCC & just stood next to him 'cause I heard he didn't like to be touched, but then he put his arm around me saying, "Oh, we can get closer than that, darling".
That's when they took the photo so I look a little nuts.

BioWare original co-founder Greg Zeschuk stated that the executives who shut down the studio “never made a game” and shed light on how detached from reality EA is regarding game design🚀
“There’s this weird belief that you can just kind of recreate great games with random people and AI. It doesn’t work.”
Source: @80Level
Zeschuck left BioWare after Mass Effect 3, and he’s been working entirely outside the video game industry the last few years.

Apparently @EA didn't like that we saw the leaked internal trailer for Mass Effect: Universe
So it would be a shame if we shared it far and wide.

EA employees are speaking out about mismanagement, GenAI push and BioWare’s closure🚀
✅Employees report that the "do less, better" mantra has simply resulted in handling the same workload with fewer staff.
✅Upper management is heavily promoting generative AI (specifically Claude), telling staff that adoption is mandatory for the future.
✅Workers believe the technology is being pushed to test how drastically EA can cut headcount while maintaining output.
BioWare’s Decline & Closure
✅BioWare was repeatedly forced to abandon its strengths (narrative choice, consequences, companions) to chase unprofitable live-service and multiplayer trends, wasting significant resources.
✅Studio leadership grew overly reliant on user experience research (UXR) and fear-driven decision-making, stifling creative risk-taking before the studio's closure.

Disappointed, but definitely not surprised. So much of what’s said reflects very much how many of us felt, as it was quite obvious for the last 10-15 years.
Risk-averse development, “do less” mentality, cost-cutting..etc.
I feel really bad for the studios and talents that had to be suffocated under EA’s mentality. It’s obvious what kind of people they were ever since they tried to gaslight gamers into thinking single player gaming to be dead.

🚨 KAPIL DEV JUST SAID WHAT MODERN CRICKET DOESN’T WANT TO HEAR. 🤯
“Everyone wants to be a batsman today. Batsmen are like officers, bowlers are like workers. People just want to sit in air-conditioned rooms.”
And honestly, there’s an uncomfortable truth behind this statement. Modern cricket has turned batting into a superstar business, while fast bowling is still a job that demands punishment. Sixes get celebrated, strike rates get worshipped, and a 200-strike-rate cameo can make someone a household name. Meanwhile, a bowler can defend 10 runs in the final over, deliver under enormous pressure, and still get blamed for conceding one boundary.💔
cricket cannot keep making life easier for batters while expecting bowlers to keep producing miracles. If a batter misses a big shot, it’s often called an aggressive approach. If a bowler misses a yorker by a few inches, it becomes a meme. One gets praised for taking risks; the other gets punished for making mistakes.🤷♂️
Kapil Dev’s point goes beyond batting versus bowling. It’s about a cricket culture that increasingly celebrates the glamour of scoring runs but often overlooks the physical sacrifice, skill and mental pressure required to take wickets.
WITHOUT GREAT BOWLERS, THERE IS NO GREAT BATTING. A 200-run innings means very little if the opposition has nobody capable of challenging it.
